Power Buddies-Lonely Ghoul EP

A really fun EP from a band that stands tall and sure amongst a long list of others who use horror movie imagery and themes in their music, whether it be for euphemistic ways to avoid directly talking about less than vanilla sexual habits, drug addiction, psychological illness, being a teenager, or finding oneself to be a member of some other (for better or worse) disenfranchised or disembodied member of the prevailing social order (in the case of the first song Lonely Ghoul, those poor souls are record collectors, or specifically, ones who found their way to this recording).

And why not? Good for them. Everyone needs a hobby, or whatever this is. And it really is very entertaining, as it always has been.

The EP consists of 4 tracks, all of which contain organ (yes that's right--Elvira/Addams Family style organ) and all of which are short and catchy enough to please anybody despite the vocalist sounding like a rabid monster of some kind and the buzzsaw noise the guitars make in the mix when they bump up against the fairly aggressive drumming.

Despite the occasionally bleak nature of the lyrics, the band plays so as to not sound too gloomy. This is particularly the case on a track like Basement which appears to be about some sort of domestic problem. The singer sounds desperate as he moans and wails searching for a way to express the turmoil inside and the wah-wah guitar sounds like its dying, but the chord progression and accompanying guitar riff suggests triumph, perseverance, and dignity and is punchy and bouncy enough to sound at least a little hopeful. The song gradually (and ambiguously) comes to an end making us wonder if relief was granted or something else happened.

The EP can currently be found on Bandcamp for free download, but do be a Sweety Pie and pay what you can for it, its the least you can do.
