Death Grips-Steroids

From it's earliest moments Steroids is a remarkable achievement. It starts with the aptly name "My Whole Life" with it's harsh and intrusive emergency horn/bouncy ball throbs of noise and ends with the also aptly named "Steroids G" where MC Ride presumably gives his final thoughts on what is thought to be the topic of the megamix. In between is every level of sonic intensity that seemingly hadn't been explored in so many different styles and musical approaches. It's originality is outshined only by the fact that it all seems so perfect and destined to be. To my ears anyway.

Concerning the music, one might assume that the title earns it's name from the music itself: blistering digital hardcore played at seemingly impossible rpms making sounds that appear to themselves to be under some sort of indescribable influence. But a closer look at the lyrics (at least I think so) shows that the music often plays a scenic role mimicking the sounds of Vegas or the metaphorical war scene in "My Whole Life".

Speaking of metaphors and other English major concerns, the EP I think contains an anti-drug message. Ride has a good time as he boasts about being into "**** like this" and there are those girls he mentions too, but the court scene, the "sycophants", and the almost sociological elements of "Black Body" bring the piece to a whole other level. Megamix is current lingo, but the ep sounds operatic and conceptual and is necessarily taken as awhole. It is haunting, chaotic, dumbfounding, and very very very noisy. I've avoided writing about it because I don't think I truly get it. And apparently there is some sort of occult conspiracy about it too.

Rating: 5/5

P.S. If you watch the video on YouTube it comes with a super trippy, super fun light show
