Rep System

This is just an idea but I have seen many rep systems on vbulliton forums, it would be cool to have here....not necessary but it would be cool.

adidasss 06-08-2007 01:08 PM

I thought so too a while back...not many agreed.*sigh*

Danny 06-08-2007 01:13 PM

Well it would be cool...I don't see the problem with it, it would encourage people to make better posts.

MURDER JUNKIE 06-08-2007 01:28 PM

I think we should have it, I would OWN that shizz

Every single post is GOLD

right-track 06-08-2007 02:29 PM

Here's what would probably happen:
People would give out rep points to members they are friends with, even if in reality they didn't deserve any.
Ultimately leading to a rep system that wouldn't accurately reflect reality.

Unless there was another way of doing this...I'm against it.

adidasss 06-08-2007 02:40 PM

I think that's bull****...we all know each other pretty well and I for one am willing to give the benefit of the doubt to our members that they wont behave so childishly...

I'm on another forum that has it, and I think it's a fun addition to the site. It motivates you to post (intelligently) and gives people the opportunity to let you know they disagree with you without having to argue too much, or let you know they appreciate you...either way, if you don't take it too seriously, it can't go wrong.

sleepy jack 06-08-2007 04:01 PM

I think if we had it so only mods could award reps and the members just PMed the mods or we made a thread for them to post the posts-worthy of it it would be fine, I could see some serious abuse otherwise.

Sparky 06-08-2007 04:05 PM

i think its unnecessary, i think if people just post intelligently in general they get treated with more respect.

do we actually have to give people a reward for posting something interesting or intelligent on a music forum, i was hoping people would want to do that :(

adidasss 06-08-2007 04:13 PM

It's just a bit of fun man.

Sparky 06-08-2007 04:21 PM

fiiiiiiiine :-/

It should be for members to award other members, moderators are to be just that................................MODERATE

sleepy jack 06-08-2007 04:51 PM

I think you're missing the point, its nice when you make a great post to get some recognition because while you may gain respect its not exactly a 'great job!' or anything.

Okay do you want all the mods to stop posting than and only moderate?

Seriously, I think you would have pointless reps left and right if that went down, all i'm saying is if someone makes a great post the member goes to the moderate and they rep it would cut down on the pointless repping.

MURDER JUNKIE 06-08-2007 04:55 PM

It's the way it works on every other forum, and excuse my mistake as I'm a little tipsy

A moderators job is to be Moderate or Neutral if you will

right-track 06-08-2007 05:00 PM

If this gets enough support, then giving it a trial run won't do any harm.
If things start getting silly, then it gets binned.

adidasss 06-08-2007 05:05 PM

I don't know why you're all being negative a priori. Seriously, it's a little insulting to argue that it would turn into shit without giving it a go. Plenty of other sites use it, are we saying MB is really that retarded?

right-track 06-08-2007 05:09 PM

I'm not saying the members here are retarded (although I sometimes wonder), I'm saying some here would give rep points out to friends and won't be arsed about others...

adidasss 06-08-2007 05:11 PM

And you know that how? I'd like to think that we're a pretty tight-nit community (I'm not digging big3's crap about cliques)...everyone knows everyone...

Besides, we don't even know if the Admin would be willing so this is a moot discussion.

MURDER JUNKIE 06-08-2007 05:12 PM

On my other forums I always spread around rep to noobs if their posts are intelligent

I spread the rep all around, even to people I don't much like if they make a good post....and ok, the sleeping pill is starting to kick in...we shall continue tomorrow...*whoa...this is some good shit*

I like the idea of that. ^

I've not had experience posting on a forum with a rep system.
So like I said, giving it a go won't do any harm.
Just don't be surprised if it turns to shit.

sleepy jack 06-08-2007 05:19 PM

Yeah, I think we have alot of members who would rep fairly but I think we have alot of people with grudges that wouldn't rep certain members if they're deserved it for a post and members who would rep posts that didn't deserve it because of the poster.

It really can't get any worse

Wouldn't that be too much hassle for the mods?

Also I have modded a vbulliton forum and you can view members rep comments through the mod cp and if someone is using rep wrong or playing "rep tennis" they can be warned or banned.

right-track 06-08-2007 06:08 PM

Would the regular members know who gave them positive or negative rep?

Well there are settings where it wouldn't show who gave them rep which would be really good so you could neg rep people without them hating you.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-08-2007 07:16 PM

I'd like to see more people making some decent posts before something is bought in for me to rate them with.

The Dave 06-09-2007 04:20 PM

The rep system as VB has it only only allowe dmembers to give no more than 5 reps a day and you couldn't give to another person unless you had it spread out, atleast that's how it was on the vb forum I sued to go to. Also, in their usercp, they could see the reason that a member gave for the rep + or - so if a member was flaming another member, the member being flamed could report it to a mod and what not, though I don't see that happening on here, everyone has seemed pretty cool with eachother lately.

Well the admins control all the settings on it, so it varies from forum to forum.

The Dave 06-09-2007 05:08 PM

^Well then we could just keep it strcit at first to see if any problems do occur, and if they don't, then increase the privileges.

Danny 06-09-2007 05:37 PM

Yeah thats not a big deal, I haven't seen any problems on this site as far is fighting or anything yet.

littleknowitall 06-29-2007 06:48 PM

A rep system would be too messy, too general, if your going to reward someone be more specific, use an awards system, they're easy to put in too. And it's just left up to the mods then too cook up some nominations and a poll now and again, or put in some regular competitions, the showcase would be an easy place for one or two if it was used a little more.

Pilzkopf 07-04-2007 04:49 AM

I got talked into putting a rep system on my own forum and I've regretted it.

=ladyface= 10-08-2007 02:30 AM

I know I've only just arrived but I wouldn't mind the introduction of a rep system; it works well on the other vBulletin boards that I visit. There's always the problem of pointless negative rep but the users dishing it out can get rep bans and the like.

I've seen a few posts here already that I'd love to give some positive rep to but when I've gone over to click the scales or the exclamation mark there's been a blank space. :p:

I realise that it's not important to have a rewards scheme to get people posting (because people should be posting for the sake of discussion) but I think it's nice to give people a bit of recognition in the form of little blobs.

The Dave 10-08-2007 09:45 AM

^Which could encourage better posts instead of the all too typical, "lol, this band sucks."

Yeah, I would hope so. That would only happen if rep was used in a sensible way (i.e. not giving it to your friends just because they're you're friends) and I think that could happen here. I haven't been around for long but it seems like this place attracts some intelligent people.

Dr_Rez 10-28-2007 04:14 PM

Yea, i enjoy when forums do this.

Not only that, but it cuts down on flaming a lot, because if a certain "stupid/wrong" post receives lot of negative ratings, then well, everyone will know that person was wrong.
