PMO's Easy Peasy Guide to Uploading Your Own Compilations

As you may know MB fully welcomes people uploading and exchanging music compilations as a way of showing peeps what they're into here, but if you are confused on how you are supposed to do this then help is at hand. 3 easy steps!

Step One: Make your Mix.
The first part's easy (or is it?), making your mix and choosing what tracks you want there. Once you've got your mix sorted pop all the files you want into a new folder. So that you have the tracks in the right order, you can set the track numbers by right clicking on the file and going to 'Properties', then 'Details', or more simply you can just put 01, 02 etc. before each track name.

Step Two: Zip It
Next you're going to have to turn your folder of music into a single compressed file known as RAR or ZIP files. To do this you will need a program such as Winrar which you can get here.
With this set up all you have to do is right click on your desired folder and choose 'Add to archive', choose whether you want it in ZIP or RAR format (it doesn't really matter), hit OK and a converted copy will be made.

Step Three: Up It
Now you just need to get it onto the interwebz. There's a number of websites dedicated to uploading files, some of the more popular ones are here...

Mediafire (My personal choice, seems to be quickest and links don't seem to die for a while.)
Megaupload
Rapidshare
Sendspace

They should be quite easy to navigate, often you just have to find your file with the browse option, hit OK, maybe add some tags and you're away.
After it has uploaded you will be provided with a link which goes to the file, which you can give to who you wish.

And you're done! If this looks a bit daunting, apart from the making the actual compliation part, it really isn't that long a process.
So get uploading in the Mixtape thread, (and anywhere else really, for instance if you want to put up a taster of a band) and share some of your booty!

Quick Note: While uploading Compilations is all fine and dandy uploading actual albums is not, you'll have to find other ways to do that ;)

Sadly this is all a no no for Macs. (MacRar does not work)

Piss Me Off 09-05-2008 09:45 AM

I sadly know little about Macs, so i'm stumped in helping people there...

This should be stickied fella.

Stucked...

...for now.

We can leave this here and incorporate it into the n00bs Guide to MusicBanter when it's finished.

THANK YOU I have had no idea how to do this until now, I've always been too embarrassed to ask anyone but now I don't have to. :)

If anyone's still wondering... you just control-click the files and select 'Compress' or 'Archive' for Macs. It archives them into compressed files that should work on PCs also. It works on mine anyway.

I have a problem with megaupload. Everytime I try to download something from there a get a Buffer Overrun Error. Anyone know what the problem is?

gunnels 02-09-2009 07:29 PM

I am a tad embarassed to ask, but how does the recipient use the RAR file?
<_< I won't play.

Roygbiv 02-09-2009 08:10 PM

For Mac Leopard users, the command is "Compress" as opposed to send to archive. That was for the last operating system known as Tiger.

; )

Or you can use StuffIt to zip/compress the files with a Mac, if you have it.

Ok, so I have a question... what if I uploaded the files singly to a folder on my mediafire account. Can I now convert this to a rar/zip file? or do I need to upload it all over again as a rar/zip file?

You can get the person to download the entire folder you saved them into on mediafire, but this is probably not the way to go (The person then has to un-zip every file individually). Just folder them preupload, rar the folder into a single file them upload.

trouserjazz 01-17-2010 01:17 PM

Is there an easier way to do it than moving files into new folders to zip.

Anyway I can do it so I dont have to mess about putting fles back into their original spot when im done.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-17-2010 01:23 PM

Just make a copy of them

trouserjazz 01-17-2010 01:30 PM

Oh yea, what a dunce I am when it comes to computers.

Oh well thats one less stupid question for the future.

trouserjazz 01-17-2010 03:24 PM

Ok im having more probelms.

Ive mad my mix and zipped it up.

I cant seem to get it onto any site. Ive tried media fire and although the file is showing 100% transferred it wont get past the waiting for verification part.

This has led me to try mega upload but I can even find the upload tab there. On my files its just a folder. Now ive checked the net to see how to do this and the various guides seem to point somewhere that either doesnt exist or is down on the site.

It might be me being an idiot but I cant seem to get this done. can anyone help or point me in the right direction.

Piss Me Off 01-18-2010 08:19 AM

Mediafire's verification bit does take a fair while for me. As for Megaupload i don't know what's going on there, if you've gone straight to megaupload.com then you just have to browse, enter a description and hit send next to that box :s

Failing that... Free large file hosting. Send big files the easy way!

gogojessicat 01-23-2010 01:45 AM

i'm having a similar problem.. it gets to like 50% or so and then says it failed. i've tried several different sites and no luck.... what could that be?

If it keeps on happening, it could be a problem with the rar file itself or one of the mp3s in the file.

gogojessicat 01-23-2010 03:28 AM

how can i tell?

Dunno, check all the mp3s by playing them yourself at least, and if they are fine, re folder them and re-rar the folder. Try again I suppose.

gogojessicat 01-23-2010 03:11 PM

i did. no luck. :( i fail at all things technical/computer related...

Shake 01-23-2010 04:05 PM

Mine does that too, but it's because of a ****ty internet connection. If it drops, even for a second, the file will fail. If you're using wireless, try a wired connection. If not, then I don't know what to tell you
