I was thinking the new banner should include the different mediums that music was recorded on throughout the history of modern music.

1. The Edison blue cylinder (pictured include below for those who don't know what one looks like)
2. 78 rpms
3. 33 1/3 rpms / LPs
4. 45 rmps / Singles
5. Reel to Reels
4. Compact Cassette
5. 8 track tapes
6. CDs
7. *.WAV files
8. *.MP3 files

That's a great idea, man. I'd dig it.

Wire recorders, you forgot that step.
r2r was there before 33rpm's.
Otherwise it's fine :).

I myself wouldn't mention 8-track as it hasn't been much of a development. The cassette was there already. 8 track was just 'another format', like Minidisc.

Are you sure? I thought 8 tracks had a run before tapes, more like Lazerdiscs before DVDs.

Before compact cassette you mean?
8-track is actually older, but it's not really a predecessor to anything.
It just was a cassette system like there were literally hundreds at that point.
You won't believe how many shapes and sizes of cassette there were.
8-track was never intended for recording and it wasn't capable of rewinding, so it was in most ways worse than any tapedeck. The good side is that, since there's 8 tracks (2x4 stereo tracks) on the tape, and 8-track can contain up to 88 minutes of tape, which is pretty long considering the size. This made it very suitable for car use. In the end, hifi cassette kicked the crap out of 8-track in both reliability, useability and sound quality.

Altough 8-track cought on in north america, it never really cought on anywhere else. I do have an 8-track player and a pretty big pile of 8-track cassettes, but I can tell you, most of them sound awful. But then, most prerecorded cassettes sounded pretty afwul too.

Here they are

They're pretty hard to take a picture of because they're actually stored above my stairs.
Taking this picture was actually pretty dangerous ;).

How would you picture WAVs?

I would choose for this and not for seperate Mp3 & Wav.
There's always been compression audio (remember those old mpg files? :D)

Some cool albums there :) A lot that I listen to today actually. The cahoots cassette there, is that the In Cahoots band led by Phil Miller?

Anyways, the problem with the banner project aside from making one is that we rely on the goodwill and participation of our administrator(s) to do anything about it. We may get that, but perhaps it's wise to ask first. I'd once made some new BBCodes that I sent them and then I got a very clear "no" back. Someone should send Yac a message and ask if there's a chance we could change it!
