Tagging/Referencing

This might get confusing since we already have a useless function called tagging on here that people only use to be dicks. So let me explain it and then we can call it something else.

We've got a lot of threads like "Spill your Guts" and "Recommend Music to [Poster X]". In many cases, I don't see a reference to anything directed my way until later. Can we look into finding a way to post something and allow that post to notify someone they've been addressed in a thread? On facebook (where I'm taking the term from) its usually @Jackhammer.

If we did that here, the site would PM him with a link to the post mentioning him. It would allow the discussions to be more fruitful. Lets call it "referencing."

Thats a good idea @TheBig3, it'd also be like twitter. A problem would be what happens if I tagged @TheBig3 more than once, wouldn't you get more and more notifications each time?

Thats a technical question. I don't know what the site is capable of but like anything else, if people are dicks with something we can ban them. Multiple notifications would constitute harassment.

I personally think it's a great suggestion. Given how slow the technological progress has been on this website, however, I have my doubts it will ever get off the ground. However, you can use the search function as a less-accurate way of checking to see if you've been mentioned.

And I currently do, but I think we can agree that features of this nature are becoming common place and would be a massive advantage.

It sounds like a good idea. Using the search function to search your username isn't really cutting it anymore, and it's hard enough to read through the results as it is. However, I'm with Conan on this one. It most likely won't get implemented.

TheBig3 05-16-2011 12:59 PM

well thats just great.

I'm just basing that off of the current speed at which improvements are being made. Maybe it will be a feature in 5 years?

Paedantic Basterd 05-16-2011 01:11 PM

I like this, but am inclined to agree on its likelihood. Not to mention we've just sent them a list of requests that we're crossing our fingers over.

someonecompletelyrandom 05-16-2011 01:16 PM

Maybe one day I'll save up my money and buy MB from the current owner :D

Freebase Dali 05-16-2011 01:40 PM

Guys, something like this was actually in the list of requests we made together, and has been sent...

Quote:

- Stop poll votes from bumping threads
- Add dynamic "new notifications!" link in welcome section, with dropdown menu consolidating notifications. (individual notifications for profile comments, subscribed threads, etc.)
- Raise PM inbox storage limit
- Enable member list
- Disable "read more" link when pasting copied text
- White-list cock & dick from swear filter. (interferes with name-related titles and links)
- Add shoutbox search function
- Add "report shout" link in shoutbox
- Implement notification of being quoted in a post
- Add timestamps for posts in the shout box
- Add "******" to the swear filter
- Enable member avatar changes with 175 pixels [width] by 250 pixels [height] limitation (instead of 70 x 70).
Anyway, the N word is now filtered, and cock/dick is now unfiltered. In Yac's words, "The wheels turn slowly, but they do turn".

Give it some time.

Sansa Stark 05-16-2011 01:48 PM

oh for real?

dick dick dick dick

edit: omg

Freebase Dali 05-16-2011 01:50 PM

Why do people not believe me? lol...
When I posted it in the mod forum, even they had to try it for themselves. It's like I have no credibility at all.

Well if they start by doing word filtering, I guess it's going to take an awful lot of time before anything really useful wil happen :D.
Word filtering is non-sense, if you ask me.
If people really want to insult each other, they'll find a way anyhow.

Nah. Hacked Yac's account and did the swear filter trick, then will sit back and wait for everyone to get impatient about the useful requests.

Big3's suggestion is slightly different from the quoting, however, if quoting is implemented, it could potentially be used in this context as well.
