How Important is the Name that Tune section?

Name that tune

I'm just wondering how useful people consider this section of the forum to be. I don't doubt that there are some songs that people liked to hear on there, but it seems to me that the number of people sticking around after posting in that section is either very small on nonexistent.
I've also not seen any of the regular members start a thread in there either (but that's really just in the last 5 months I have been a member here).
I'm wondering if people think it still constitutes an important part of this forum or if it has worn out it's usefulness.

I love that section and I'm actually quite offended that you would suggest it isn't useful.

Well, I've not been here long enough to really make any proper judgement over this, but it comes across to me that no one in the MB community actually uses it for asking about songs. It seems to be more often used by people who only stay until their question is answered, which hardly benefits the community.

Of course duga, I don't want to offend you, I respect you a lot and just want to find out what everyone thinks about this.

EDIT: If people agree in general still like it, I'd be happy for this thread to be moved to the jokes forum!

Relax, I was just joking. I think it's a pretty useless section, personally...but people join the forum all the time with the sole purpose of figuring out a song. Instead of flooding the main music sections, they can post there (or we move it there).

You don't want to see what this place looks like when these people don't have a proper place to throw their junk.

I chose other because I don't really care but I've used it before a few times.

I am regularly moving threads into it, and I do find that they are often responded to, with due speed.

You shouldn't do this to me!

I see, I've misunderstood it's real use!
I imagine that without it, the general music section would look very ugly with closed threads dotted everywhere, so I see where you're coming from.
The question remains; should people be allowed to sign up for the purpose of merely asking help in identifying a song?

Personally I think they should, because I don't like the idea of being shut tight completely, but on the other hand it doesn't really help the community much.

Yes, that's the problem with this thread, I haven't really been around long enough to see any regular members use it, but this is obviously proof of the contrary.

Yes because there's no real way of stopping them. As was already established, while starting a new thread elsewhere asking to identify a song is unacceptable, the only real solution is to have the Name That Tune section to keep them all together and there's nothing to stop them from posting there. There's no other way around it. It's not like you can interrogate new members as to why they've signed up and then not let them post looking for help.

I've gone into it a few times, I don't think I've ever used it personally but I have helped answer some requests. it's fun going into it and seeing a) if you can actually solve any of the requests, and b) how crazy they sometimes are.

"hey, I heard this song when I was 5, it had a guy singing and I there was a line about a girl...

DOES ANYONE KNOW????"

Sometimes there are interesting ones though - there's one in there at the moment which multiple people have posted in and absolutely noone recognises despite their being a video of it. It's worth having, because it doesn't hurt the rest of the forum having it, it helps to have a place to send all the random requests that the forum gets, not everything on the forum has to be purely in order to "help the community" and hey, it's fun.

Yes, this is true and I agree with it entirely. It's also not right to have a situation where new members can't get anything out of the knowledge available to them on the forum.

And of course, if you don't want to post there, you don't have to!
