No seriously though, remember when you guys had a sense of humor? A year ago these posts and trolling wouldn't barely register with any of you...I mean, what happen, did you're...did you're souls die off?

I happen to think this thread is hilarious and your original post was hilarious. Ethan/PissMeOff/JJJ/Jackhamer/Seltzer/RT and so on would have loved this.

James 02-23-2012 12:53 AM

I thought this thread was pretty funny. Music discussion is better right now than it has been in a long time so I just took it as a joke.

Wow I really was a bitch last night. I'm sorry Big3. I had a very long and painful day yesterday and I think everything just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm really not that hostile.

Your avatar fits what you just posted really well ;)

No hard feelings, I just didn't see what this was gaining.

Exactly. I actually think this place is booming at the moment. But there is always someone that isn't happy, to which I say, don't complain, act on it. Creating a music forum discussion area defeats the purpose of the other music sections.

I can't believe mods apologizing for their reaction to this thread. yall are crazy.

Well, *I* felt your thread was funny and that you were being humorous in a non-hostile, non-critical way.

I think being a lounge lizard is cool. I once started a thread here about music. I think it was about the Black Eyed Peas, because I believe the label of "music" should not be applied to whatever it is that they're making.

^ This. Let's figure out how to do this: force members into dead forums. I don't know how exactly, but it would be a new twist that you wouldn't expect at a music forum: "Look, you joined, now you have to post in [insert specific music forum], or you die. You've gotta make 15 posts per week, or else. Go!"

Here's a possibility. Every once in a while we should have the mods hide a whole forum (like General Music), and see what happens. That would be one way to force people into other forums...even electronica! ;) Just imagine: one crisp, Scottish morning, Kayleigh will visit MusicBanter and see that HOLY SHIT, the only music forum available to post in is electronica!!! "Oh happy day!"

The trouble is, you don't have to post every time you're on here. If you hide a certain section people like, it won't force them to do anything. We'll just log off immediately.

The only productive varient of this idea is to temporarily close the lounge, which there's not really any harm in doing for a week or so.

I personally don't get a lot of what goes on in the Lounge. Why is there a "Bitch Box" when there's a "Your Day" thread? What's the difference?
And a "Who gives a f*ck" thread. They all seem to be outlets for complaining, important, I know, but why so many?

One way to enhance posting in the "Electronica Forum" is to combine it with a more active forum. Country/World Music/Folk isn't exactly booming, but its much better than when they were 3 forums on their own.

50% of the game is visibility. So if you put Electronica in with Indie and moved Alternative up to Rock & Metal (maybe give it another subsection) you'd have a more appropriate placement for things and you'd gin up a lot more traffic into forums that could use some love.

As for the apologies, Sparky, I've apologized, some of them have apologized. We all over react. I'm still not sure how some folks took me the way they did but its water under the bridge. And Burning Down...girl you know I'll always love you.

I think we should merge Classical with Electronica. Then people would visit the forum just because they'd be thinking, "What the heck??" and get stuck there, enamored by its peculiarity. Put it up above "General Music," too. That would help.

;)

Guybrush 02-25-2012 05:49 AM

Funny joke with a good point even if it's not done in a constructive way. I did have a problem with music discussion on MB as I worked really hard to keep something like a prog community going, for example with the prog & fusion album club which was basically meant to facilitate discussion. It worked, a bit, but nowhere as much as I hoped and in the end, the return didn't feel worth the investment. After I'd had that feeling for what felt like a very long time, I finally gave up.

I realized it's not entirely MB's fault. Although I consider my tastes to be fairly broad, when it comes to the music I am most passionate about, I feel quite lonely here. I still do, just take a look at the Canterbury Week thread which is now starting to look like a monologue. It's just hard to change people who are not interested in it into people who are interested. Too hard, really! It's not like you can expect/require people to change their tastes for you.

So, for practical purposes, MB is for discussing some music, but not all of music. Smaller subcommunities of interested people, like the prog community, are very small and vulnerable. If there's nothing going on, then newcomers interested in that sort of music will find less reason to stick around. They die off and MB loses some variety. Hence, I've figured it's probably better to find a classical forum if you want to discuss classical or a prog forum if you want to discuss Zeuhl, etc. I'm not happy about that, but I feel like I've accepted it.

Those people whose favourite sort of music is discussed here should join an album club, both to discuss their favourites and to help make sure their favourites are discussed in the future.

Paedantic Basterd 02-25-2012 09:55 AM

Ah, I can't speak for everyone Tore, but I think a lot of us are totally willing to listen to new music. The problem is that there's so much of it that getting acquainted with the fundamentals of even one new genre takes a load of time. I'm knee deep in psychedelic pop at the moment. I'd love to have a good idea of what Canterbury is about, but I've got so much on my plate as it is that it would be slow going if I started somewhere else.

Guybrush 02-25-2012 11:21 AM

I'm not criticizing people's willingness to get into new stuff. I'm not particularly quick or willing when it comes to that sort of stuff myself. I just wanted to write a little bit about my feelings regarding MB as a place to discuss music. It's obvious that the community as a whole are interested in some kinds of music more than others and it may be better to just accept that rather than let it frustrate you or even spend your energy working against it.

That last bit seems a bit cynical and the reason I feel that way is I believe many of those who put a lot of work into the site writing about niche stuff which is not already popular on MB feel like they don't get much in return for their work. F.ex I doubt anyone trying to do a New Country album club would find it rewarding. It's just how it is - you can't blame people for not loving and wanting to discuss Garth Brooks (ex). I definitely admire people for trying though!

I want to say two things about this:

1. Garth Brooks has a new country album?

2. Its not just that I feel a lot of people aren't willing to try new music, but instead rather post in a Current events section. Which was the point of this thread that everyone seemed to miss. MB has become a place that has a more active lounge than a music forums (imo) so its more like TopicBanter with a music subsection.

I don't really know why the "people work hard!" talking points got trotted out since I wasn't attacking anyone for that. I've put in a lot of work to this site; I'm aware of what people can do. But that isn't what I was saying. My question is and has been "Why do you skip a thread that has a Youtube embred (so you're doing 0 work) and go post in the "What does your **** look like after you eat corn" thread.

I just figured Garth Brooks might be an important figure in, if only as an influence on, new country. I don't know much about it at all to be honest.

I get your point and I do agree. A reason may be that perhaps aside from album clubs, the casual music discussions on the board tend to be a bit shallow. Often, I don't really find them interesting. As an example, I can use the offical The Who thread.

http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-n-ro...ho-thread.html

After the OP, if you look at the replies, even though I like The Who, it's just not interesting reading to me. Okay, there are plenty of examples of the opposite so I'm not saying this is always the case, but generally speaking, this is how I feel. I generally don't feel like I learn anything new and interesting about the bands I like by visiting Musicbanter. However, I may do so from reading discussions in smaller niche communities where people share anecdotes and get into more in-depth discussions. It's like this site covers too much ground to make any one music subject really interesting. I mean, if you make a thread about a band, a bunch of people will post saying they like it or hate it, but if you make a thread where you try to discuss the different line-ups or which version of a song you prefer which exists on different releases, then few are likely to be involved in that band to the point where they'll have something interesting to contribute with. So it generally stays very light and that makes music discussion a bit boring. Threads on current events and so on are actually more engaging when it comes to debating and that's why they're more popular.

Paedantic Basterd 02-25-2012 12:23 PM

I think I would rather our community drain down into the Lounge and remain active than be driven off due to a lack of shared interest in their preferred genres.

I agree with this, and on another note - while it's true that reading a bunch of one sentence love/hate comments isn't that engaging, there's still something to be said for finding and learning about new kinds of music from this forum. I know that since I've joined musicbanter i've found a whole bunch of new bands that are staples for me now thanks to someone who wrote a paragraph and never got much more back about it. Music isn't a really easy thing to debate since it's so subjective - but I don't see the problem. It's as much about sharing music as it is about discussing it.
