Here's a thought for you: It was mentioned that he quit playing video games. If he decided he wanted to get his life in order by quitting forums/social media as well, perhaps he changed his password/email so that it would be impossible for him to log in? It could even have happened while he was drunk and emotional.

Off topic, but in England, "tired and emotional" is a euphemism understood to mean "drunk," as in "Last night Lindsay Lohan swore at reporters as she left a night club. This morning a spokesperson for the star said that she had been tired and emotional after a long day."

^ That's a good question. I suppose traditionally English people are so prim and proper that they never behave emotionally unless they're drunk, so your what-if situation never arises!
