Henry Cow
As far as prog goes, this is where it's at. Experimental, RIO (rock in opposition), their first concert was opening for Pink Floyd, FRED FRITH (a genius), toured with Beefheart, made music that was challenging, avant-garde, often free-improv, jazzy, rock n' roll, always progressive, etc. etc.
I don't know how much more I can say, Henry Cow put out the most deliciously challenging blend of rock and jazz that my ears have heard... look it up. Here's a sock:

I've never heard them before but I know they have links with Robert Wyatt & Soft Machine which makes me interested.

Sounds interesting, I'll check this out.
That said, I heard an album by The Art Bears about a year ago, and I didn't like it at all. I think it's definitely worth revisiting that album though, because I could probably dig it now. edit: i downloaded Unrest, but it's password protected. Any idea what the password is, chumb?
