I started with Faust IV, which is an unusual album, but also unusually compelling. I think it's best described on allmusic as a series of sometimes unrelated experiments.

Electric Silence - Download

Pros: krautrock with a lot of diversity. Has some middle eastern/Indian influences as well.

Cons: No vocals but that's not a big deal for me. Doesn't feel any different from those with vocals.

:)

i think i read somewhere that that was recorded at branson's Oxford studio? i used to live there innit. cool by association.

why aren't more people talking about kraftwerk? look deep inside yourselves and sort it out

I do love me some Kraftwerk right now, Trans-Europe Express in particular. It feels so cold but once you get into it the hooks are there.

kraftwerk 2 is awesome

Yeah, Faust makes it for me, especially IV... Also the live/radio stuff. Otherwise Ash Ra Tempel has blown my mind a few times, and that one Kraftwerk album (I think it is) with the Neu! rhythm section - holy craps! Heavy!

Molecules 09-13-2008 10:11 AM

kraftwerk i think perfectly diluted music unlike anybody before or since; but there are so many levels to something like Trans-Europe Express. It's the Cold War, totally de-Americanized, Futurist, what have you; yet it's also celebrating our everyday interactions with technology. You could argue that only their first three albums are 'krautrock' (as the Brit music press defined it) but they retained the jam aesthetic in their live shows apparently

re faust. you'll never guess what just popped up on Last.fm. 'Giggy Smile' is... hilarious

Oi, where you been? Glad to have you back Molecules. Is there any top links to a lot of this stuff. I have some Can and bits and bobs but need a lot lot more.

alright Lee how's tricks? i've probably been listening to more *ahem* contemporary r'n'b that krautrock recently if i'm honest... but Julian Cope's list in the appendix of Krautrocksampler (on .pdf somewhere in this thread I believe) is definitive, missing alot of those titles myself. ah
