Rhys Chatham
oh god oh god every time i listen to die donnergotter
it just blows me away more. guitar trio is like what every early sonic youth song was trying to be (like burning spear), waterloo is just astounding in its complete reinterpretation of traditional elements, and that crushing cacophony in the beginning of die donnergotter is one of the most impressive sounds i've ever heard. it's just the most awe-inspiring, majestic and ambitious music, and way more consonant than glenn branca who works along the same lines. really good. fucking brilliant. did i mention he's really good? http://www.thelivemusicreport.com/20...rio_jan07g.jpg |
I am listening to A Crimson Grail ATM and the ambience may bore some people rigid but I am blown away by the opener. Absolutely subliminal.

Die Donnergotter and Two Gongs are crazy good. An Angel Moves Too Fast To See is a great general overview too. Whether it's drone, no wave, ambient or minimalism, the guy is invariably bang on the money.

Rhys on the dance floor
Rhys Chatham was in Helsinki early this year. I was djing on the event. It was great fun! Rhys & a team of Finnish musicians even performed one extra piece encore which they had "composed" spontaneously backstage. Actually the song was almost exactly the same they had played before the encore only with some very tiny changes. Haha! After that song, Rhys asked "Where is the dj?" and said "Play some dance music! I want to dance!" So, eventually Rhys came to the dance floor and did these quite original dance moves for about half an hour. It was fun to watch!
