cool instruments

so i am in an experimental psychedelic band and we play a lot of wierd stuff. i try to come up with new things to do with my guitar to drive out strange sounds from my guitar. (kind of tom morello style without sounding too much like him)

although my fellow band members aren't as talented as me on guitar (so they tell me) i still would like to incorporate other instruments into my playing, since we have 2 other guitarists and i would like to avoid jumbling. my latest idea is for a sort of "trash-set." it would be a percussion instrument made out of things that give neat sounds. pvc pipes and copper tubing and 20 gallon drums and stuff, much like blue man group and STOMP. Does anybody think this is a bad idea?

what kinds of instruments would be really cool to add to an experimental psychedelic group?

Listen to einsturzende neubauten and the album 'Kollaps' for ideas. They used all sorts of things such as electric drills and steel pipes and still sounded amazing. It's quite discordant though :D

either a xylophone or vibraphone. and you can never have enough delay pedals.

Janszoon 11-23-2008 01:21 PM

The Ben Franklin designed glass harmonica is a pretty cool instrument. No idea how you'd get a hold of one, but it's pretty cool.

Demonoid 11-23-2008 01:39 PM

I second xylophone.
You could also try using objects as instruments :). But I'm no expert at this. I usually lose track of the objects used. The last one i heard was a typewriter.

I'd love to be able to play the earth harp, the sound it produces is lovely.

The guy at the top.

I've always been partial to the didgeridoo.

Aw, man. You beat me to it. I just saw a special on the history channel about Ben Franklin, and was introduced this instrument for the first time. Pretty amazing.

I really want a Balalaika... wonder what would happen if you paired it with a ukulele.

I've always thought the singing saw was pretty cool...

Theremins are the best though :)

Ah yes... the big white box, one of my favorites of all time. It was great on that one Beatles track.

Arya Stark 05-01-2009 04:26 PM

I second the Vibraphone.

It's a beautiful instrument.

Haha sorry I was a ****... all you do is on the video's page there should be a box with an HTML code and you put that stuff inside the [YOUTUBE] tags.

How about the Gizmotron, a really cool guitar accessory invented by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme from 10cc? Could add an entire dimension to your band's sound if you can get ahold of one.

Accordionists get all the chicks

Tis a good instrument... When implemented properly.

The steel cello is also an interesting one...

wokerybrockery 05-26-2009 11:57 PM

I think the Kazoo is awesome, along with the accordion.

Farfisa 05-28-2009 02:36 AM

I have a Slovenian cousin who can play the accordian like a mad man. That is no easy instrument to master either.

I present to you, the Daxophone.

http://teleomorph.files.wordpress.co...daxophone1.jpg

It consists of a platform and a wooden device called a "tongue", which can be bowed, plucked or struck to produce very surreal and cartoonish sound effects, there's tongues of many shapes and sizes to produce various tones and effects. They were designed in a way that they can emulate both the sounds of a human voice as well as other musical instruments.

http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/daxophone4.jpg

Here's the flash website of it's creator, almost all of the sound effects and music you hear are produced with the instrument.

The guy has some other odd instruments too.

start

I dunno if this guy is completely insane or a musical genius. But I know one thing for sure, I need to download some of this guy's cds.
