Jesu

Is it Metal? Is It Shoegaze? Is it Electronica? Yes it is and it's the business. Mainman Justin Broadrick has been involved with Napalm Death, Godflesh and now Jesu in a career spanning 25 years. Last years Conqueror glides and pummels. It fills the monolilithic riffing chasm in your life. It rolls around your head like a fine wine rolls over the tongue. It's Godflesh meets My Bloody Valentine and you should listen to it if you like the murkier side of Post metal.

Heard the name few times before. I think 'further information' needed. Liked the track you posted :).

jackhammer 12-10-2008 03:09 PM

You know the drill. Expect a PM :)

Janszoon 12-10-2008 03:41 PM

I was a huge Godflesh fan for ages, and honestly I think a lot of his Jesu stuff is even better than Godflesh. I especially love the Silver and Lifeline EPs.

Terrible Lizard 12-10-2008 07:32 PM

Always the best from Sir Jackhammah'
Cheers to you old boy!

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 12-10-2008 08:02 PM

pretty decent stuff. i've not gotten too into it, but it's good sometimes. should spend some more time listening to em.

Rage Against the Machine 12-10-2008 08:25 PM

Today was a perfect day for some Jesu, since it's gr1m and cold outside.

Pretty good stuff.

pianokeys 12-10-2008 11:59 PM

This is pretty cool. Different and nebulous in style but I like it.

Seltzer 12-13-2008 02:54 PM

Jesu is pretty sweet and to be honest, most stuff on Hydra Head Records is. Their Silver EP is what attracted me to them but I haven't heard any of their newer EPs yet. I think I might grab them now actually. Oh, and I like the Godflesh/MBV comparison.

simplephysics 12-14-2008 01:48 PM

I got around to Conqueror a while ago and I think it's absolutely devastating. I haven't listened to any of the EP's.

Banther 12-17-2008 08:37 PM

The only problem i find is that i am never really in the mood to listen to them. They have such a dark mono tone to every song.

Mojo 01-07-2009 04:50 PM

So Conqueror is worth a listen then it would appear?

I only have the Heartache and Silver EP's but its some good stuff. Even just on the basis of those two I've never been able to slot them easily into a genre, which I admire and from what I've heard I'd have even more trouble doing so if I listened to the rest of their material.

Conqueror is great but IMHO the Lifeline EP is even better.

I think I may have already said that in this thread. :o:

It made it's way into my favourite albums thread so it can't be that bad... or can it? lol

I should check that thread again methinks.

OK....Conqueror and Lifeline...done and done...

GravitySlips 01-07-2009 08:38 PM

My favourite is the Silver ep, but they're all great. I feel there's only so much to be done with this sound, though. Which is why, great as each release is, I don't really get excited by new Jesu releases (and tehre are a lot!)

They're also very boring live.

I feel I'm being too negative here - in summary, great band all round!

Piss Me Off 01-08-2009 07:21 AM

Conqueror is immense, just heavy enough but still some gorgeous layering.

Lee i think it may be easier in the long run if you just upload your entire music collection for me :D

The great thing is his sounds keeps changing. Heart Ache and the self-titled album almost sound like a different band from Silver and Conqueror. And with a song like "Storm Comin' On" from Lifeline he seems to be moving in yet another direction. Also, for fans of Broadrick's other work like myself, Jesu is just one facet of an incredibly diverse back catalogue.

Ever heard Godflesh's 'Love And Hate In Dub'? Very atmospheric. I'm going to have to get the whole Jesu lot methinks!

Oh hell yeah, that has some of my favorite Godflesh tracks on it. The second mix of "Almost Heaven" is absolutely amazing.

If you're looking for any of Justin Broadrick's back catalogue let me know, I have a pretty thorough Jesu and Godflesh collection as well as a couple albums from his various side projects and collaborations.

I have all Jesu stuff now but only 'Streetcleaner' and the aforementioned 'In dub' from Godflesh and no side projects :D

No problems at all. No rush at all. Cheers!

Rage Against the Machine 01-08-2009 08:19 PM

Justin Broadrick inspired me to wear hoodies more than he inspired me to make music.

Engine 05-16-2010 06:08 PM

I'm currently listening to Pale Sketches

Am I dreaming or is this real?
Either way I'm pretty excited. I've never heard this side of Broadrick before and I was convinced for a minute that some other artist stole the 'Jesu' name.

This is real? I just want to know who to credit

EDIT: OK this is obviously Broadrick. But the beats, man, the beats..

Yeah it's broadrick. With Jesu he has said that he wants to make Pop music but just a little messed up! Some of his (numerous) side projects are great too.

Conqueror is probably his finest moment. As an aside he was also instrumental in the formation of Grindcore legends Napalm Death.

Probably my favourite Jesu track. Phenomenal.

Yea, I'm a fan of Broadrick and of course I know about his metal roots.
I need to give Conqueror some more attention. I went to a record store the day the Jesu s/t came out and nothing I heard later grabbed me as much. I probably need to adjust that.. btw, I also just heard the split w/ Battle of Mice and now I gotta get me some o' that

jackhammer 05-16-2010 06:35 PM

One of his recent projects is Grey Machine and they blew my arse off when I first heard them. Very noisy and obtuse but I like them.

I LOVE that album. My favorite industrial/metal/noise music in years of not decades.

jackhammer 09-18-2010 07:04 PM

Justin K Broadrick

Anyone checked out Pale Sketches yet? I will have to track this down.

GravitySlips 09-19-2010 02:44 PM

I haven't heard it yet, definitely going to check it out though.

Godflesh are playing here in October too, can't wait for that one. Godflesh and Swans within two days of each other, bet I won't be able to hear for about a week after that!
