Soundtrack Rock
I was posting in the Mogwai thread and I had decided that we needed to create a new sub-genre for groups like Mogwai--groups that don't necessarily fit in the "rock" category or anywhere else comfortably--called "Soundtrack" rock. As I stated in my post, "I can't even drive around with them on my stereo without feeling like I'm about to find myself in the grips of some apocalyptic maelstrom".
Other groups that fit in this category may include Godspeed you Black Emperor!, Explosions in the Sky, Mercury Program, Tristeza, and Silver Mt. Zion. Who else would you lump into this category? Or is it even a decent idea for a genre. I guess that since we all experience music autobiographically, anything might serve in the "soudtrack of your life", but strictly speaking, which groups fit the "soundtrack" mold? |

Essentially, but I feel like "Post Rock", as a genre title, is pretentious. And I feel like even that is a broad spectrum.
Damn you for yanking what I thought was an original thought out from under me. haha ; ) |
Ambient Rock is still the term I prefer. Post Rock does cover a lot of bands though and it's a terrible genre name unfortunately.
|
But even ambient rock encompasses so much. I've heard virtually every rock group who utilizes sonic noise pollutants referred to as "ambient" at some point or another....
But we're getting warmer.... |
God I hate genre name arguments....
Post rock works. When someone says so and so is post rock, you have a pretty decent idea of what to expect. Live with it. |
We're just horseing around, man. Take a chill pill.
