Tin Hat

I am curious to know if anyone else in here is into this group. I'm unsure as to which genre I should have posted this under, but after some thought, I pegged this one the most appropriate.

Equipped with chords and melodies I've heard nowhere else, this group has been crucial in my exploration of chamber music. They have the capability to tie together jazz, classical and the blues with an eerie tone of nostalgia. Yet, at the same time, their music never fails to simply float in the lightness of sound. I always find something I've not noticed before while re-listening to them. This feeling combined with nostalgia from a new sound is more than enough to keep me coming back for more.

Members:

.Mike Orton (guitar, dobro)
.Carla Kihlstedt (violin, vocals)
.Ben Goldberg (clarinets)
.Zeena Parkins (harp, accordion)
.Ara Anderson (trumpet, harmonium, glockenspiel)

All multi-instrumentalists who are musically involved and driven beyond Tin Hat. To read more on their other works and side projects, you know what to do.

Discography:

.Memory Is an Elephant (1999)
.Helium (2000)
.The Rodeo Eroded (2002)
.Book of Silk (2004)
.Everything Is Illuminated (Motion Picture Soundtrack, 2005)
.The Sad Machinery of Spring (2007)

So, this is not the example I wanted to present because I like their older stuff a little bit more, but this is all I could find for now:

This song is from the album Book of Silk (2004). My favorite album is Memory is an Elephant. It's possible I could hook it up with links if anyone is interested. The only album I've not heard is the MPS they did for Everything is Illuminated

It's been awhile since I've made a thread because all the ones I've started thus far have been shit. As routine, feel free to move it elsewhere, if need be.

It sounds very much like movie soundtrack material to me but that's no bad thing. I wouldn't mind giving them a listen when you have the time to hook me up :)

I just listened to that track you posted and I thought it was brilliant. I definitely have to check out their material, I think I'd really, really dig it. Thanks for the tip.

Great band! I got into them because of Carla Kihlstedt and really enjoy the two albums I have.

Aw, you guys did reply! :)

Yes, it sounds a lot like a movie score, but still some good stuff. I'll link you as soon as possible, Ja and Blue.

Janzoon, which albums do you have?

abdullah424 10-29-2009 06:47 PM

They have a great sound to them. I managed to find most of their albums with the exceptions of Helium and Book of Silk.

Any chance of a link?

I still have trouble finding their albums. I've only Book of Silk and Memory is an Elephant. I'll trade ya.

No, sir. Check your's.

Edit: Also, which is your favorite?

SATCHMO 11-04-2009 08:28 AM

Ok. Are you kidding me?!?! how did I miss these guys?

333 11-04-2009 08:31 AM

Haha, have you heard of them before this? I've got all kinds of links if you'd like.

Edit: The song I posted, I feel, isn't the best representation of them, but it was the only one I found.

Well if the rest of their material isn't klezmer versions of Christina Aguilera songs then I'm sure I'll like them.

I think I'm going to have to go with Helium.

I did give them a listen but I found them a little boring after a while and it just sounded like Ambient Soundtrack music to me. Shame.

Aw, that is a shame. I dig them a lot, but sometimes only find myself listening to them before bed. Which album did you check out?

Edit: Also, have you checked out anything else with Carla Kihlstedt in it?

SATCHMO 12-11-2009 03:42 PM

It's ok. I've been listening to enough Tin Hat for both Lee and me.

I have The Rodeo Eroded and The Sad Machinery of Spring. I like them both a lot though they're fairly different from each other.
