Mouse on the Keys
Just stumbled across them recently. Punchy, jerky jazzy math rock?
live: They have an EP out and their debut album came out in July. |
:D I love this band. I posted a bit about them in my journal but I don't think anyone responded. Their debut is fantastic, I'm still giving it pretty regular plays. Never heard the EP. I'd say their more jazzy post rock than math rock but then I don't really know what exactly defines math rock so I probably wouldn't be one to listen to.
One of my favorites of An Anxious Object. |
Damn, that sounds pretty good!

Just listened to this album for the first time today. Amazing stuff!

Wow, nice find! What a great sound. I think a bunch of japanese jazz bands can get pretty mocky, these guys sound like they're honestly doing their own thing though.

Post rock is music that essentially takes a rock band and makes music that doesn't use your normal rock signatures, progressions, and so on. It takes a lot from ambient music, electronica, and I guess maybe shoegaze and krautrock, though I've never really listened to krautrock so I'm not sure on that. I guess that gets a little confusing because a lot of music does that these days, but here's some examples:
Slint was some of the earliest post rock: The term has largely evolved into a specific sound that started with bands like Mogwai and Tortoise and mostly did away with vocals: So I guess really post rock and math rock aren't that different, they both have to do with doing something not usually done in rock music but still using a normally traditional rock band. I've heard bands like Don Caballero described as some of the earliest founders of math rock and some of the big early post rock bands. Wow, that was really off topic, sorry. |
I know like, post-rock bands, and I'm decent at recognizing post-rock. Just seems like a pointless title, and the description just says "experimental rock" to me.

I do not like this band's name, but I am intrigued by the comments and will check out the vids or other samples.
Perhaps it's because I've been listening to a lot of Mouse on Mars lately. Mouse on the Keys just sounds a bit retarded. |
It's nothing like Mouse on Mars, don't shy away just because of the band name. This has definitely become one of my favorite post rock albums, if it could be considered that. Which is ****ing weird, because that means two of my favorites are Mouse on the Keys and Mice Parade...

Yep. That'll be fixed in a few minutes.
|
I prefer their self-titled.
