I don't think that guy was him. The person I'm thinking of composed a song using recorded children's voices and incorporated them into one of his pieces. I think this was 60s and 70s...

OccultHawk 12-28-2010 11:04 PM

karlheinz stockhausen?

clutnuckle 12-29-2010 12:22 AM

^^^ Yeah that should be it. Thinking about it now, Stockhausen would make a lot more sense for influencing Throbbing Gristle than Penderecki.

Talk Talk: Spirit of Eden and: Laughing Stock, then work your way backwards into the 80's

I wish there were more discussions on the Avant Garde/Experimental forum.

dankrsta 01-12-2011 06:33 PM

^Well, JackPat, I was thinking of opening some kind of album club in this forum. Not sure how many people would be interested, but I could try. Maybe that will liven it up.

bob. 01-12-2011 06:35 PM

go for it....could be very interesting

Sounds good.

dankrsta 01-12-2011 06:47 PM

OK then :). But you'll have to wait till tomorrow, it's almost 3 AM here.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 01-12-2011 07:22 PM

I'm very up for that.

You can count me in!

Bulldog 01-13-2011 10:32 AM

I'm probably gonna be around a lot more for a while to come, so I'll join in too.

TockTockTock 01-20-2011 12:13 PM

Alright, I've been searching everywhere for a decent band that fits the qualities that I'm looking for. So far, I've been unsuccessful. What I'm looking for is somewhere along the lines of "arty" and experimental. Something with lyrics that really grip the listener. I prefer something that's not solely built around that synch-type of feel either. I love and prefer classical instruments (or instruments found in a typical rock band, etc) although I'm open to other things. Sorry if this sounds a bit picky.

OccultHawk 01-20-2011 12:39 PM

Early Sonic Youth?

I already like them, but great suggestion.

You could look into the Frith/Cora collaboration Skeleton Crew. Only two albums of, and they're usually distributed as a double album. It's very impressive music, in fact, it's something I'm thinking of pitching next time we are pitching things for the Avant Garde album club.

I'll look into it. Thanks.

There's a great Japanese band called Ruins who terminally get ignored here because all anybody wants to do is suck Melt Banana & The Boredoms cocks.

Check them out.

Ruins is ****ing amazing(Note: Tatsuya Yoshida in my avatar). Burning Stone, Hydrogroingem, and Graviyonouch are brilliant albums some of my personal favorites.

I was into Ruins before I got into MB or Boredoms. I still consider Boredoms the best of the bunch though. Of all Japanese avant garde though I might go with Kaoru Abe.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 01-20-2011 01:13 PM

The only real relation to Boredoms, and Ruins is the fact that they're Japanese. They really don't have all that similar of a sound. I mean, apart form non-sense screamy lyrics, but even those are done in a very different way. I personally like Ruins better but that's simply because they astound me technically. Boredoms I could understand people would like better for inventiveness. Then again, you're still comparing apples to oranges.

Besides, Bondage Fruit, and Koenji Hyakkei are lightyears ahead of anything else I've heard out of Japan. Koenji, in my eyes, may be the best but I think Bondage Fruit is ridiculously underrated.

bob. 01-20-2011 01:28 PM

i second Ruins.....their album Burning Stones is seriously ignored and well worth a listen

also check out the many incarnations of Foetus

and US Maple is a great experimental rock band

edit

Foetus is good. Never heard of KK Null, though.

OccultHawk 01-20-2011 01:36 PM

Zeni Geva, yes.

Absolute Null Punkt, haven't heard but I'm sure I would.

Is there anything else?

TockTockTock 01-20-2011 01:46 PM

Wow, a lot of posts and suggestions. I'm a bit surprised considering this sub forum isn't all that active. Thank you very much.

Any great industrial bands I should be on the lookout for?

dankrsta 01-22-2011 06:51 PM

Einstürzende Neubauten
Laibach (early stuff especially)
Test Dept.
Zoviet France
Z'EV
Monte Cazazza
SPK
Nurse With Wound
Also check out bands from Throbbing Gristle family: Coil, Psychic TV, Chris & Cosey

Janszoon 01-22-2011 07:01 PM

Also Cabaret Voltaire. :)

GravitySlips 01-22-2011 07:06 PM

Ruins is a great suggestion, their drummer is unbelievable. I much prefer them to Melt Banana, although Boredoms will always be my favourite Japanese band.

Oh yeah! How could have I forgotten them. They are easily my favorite along with Throbbing Gristle.

Edit: I have to look into Ruins. I haven't listened to them.

GravitySlips 01-22-2011 07:22 PM

I'll need to check out the majority of those bands you mentioned Dankrsta. I've heard Einsturzende, NWW and Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV but the rest, I've never listened to. Heard good things about SPK and Test Dept though, so I'll probably start with them.

dankrsta 01-22-2011 07:41 PM

SPK and Test Dept are both good choices. And if you like heavy percussion don't miss Z'EV.

TockTockTock 01-22-2011 08:19 PM

Which Carabet Voltaire album would you guys suggest?

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-22-2011 08:42 PM

Red Mecca

What would be a good Thinking Plague album to start with?

"In This Life" is a masterpiece. "Moonsongs"(It's on both "In This Life", and "Moonsongs". Pretty much the same version, if memory serves.) could quite possibly be my favorite song of all time.
