It's frustrating to go from Sonny Sharrock to this.

Anyone mentioned Kawabata Makoto? Guy's a freaking guitar demon. Not sure if he's 'avant garde' enough for you folks though.

Of course he is. That guy is a monster. I saw him live with Picachu awhile back and he totally blew my mind/

I want to put Davey Graham forward too. He was in essence a folk musician, but he was a hugely experimental guitar player for his time, with his work in the 60s influential to later musicians. He explored middle eastern scales and melodies, incorporating them into traditional standards, whilst utilising off-kilter tunings and chord progressions.

On a side note, Marc Ribot has his moments.

Dustin Hoffman and John Travolta declined the role for the same reason. When Al Pacino was considered for the role of John Rambo, he turned it down when his request that Rambo be more of a madman was rejected.

On the topic, I'd like to contribute Elliot Sharp, if I haven't already:

I like Sir Richard Bishop and buckethead, but to be honest I haven't really began to explore the world of avant-garde guitarist quite yet. I definitely need to do so however.
