Can`t believe there were 57 posts to this thread before Robert Fripp got a mention! He`s responsible for some really ground-breaking guitar work, and his first collaboration album with Eno, No Pussyfooting, is a masterpiece. Ironically, after that album, there was perhaps too much pussyfooting, as he adopted a more minimal/ambient style.

And how about Adrian Belew ? His solo albums, like Desire Caught By The Tail, are pretty avant-garde as far as I know, though I`ve never taken the plunge and bought one as his style seems to jump around a lot from album to album. If anyone has a recommendation, it`d be welcome !
