Ives Plays Ives: The Complete Recordings of Charles Ives [SAA Album Club discussion]

Ives Plays Ives: The Complete Recordings of Charles Ives at the Piano, 1933-1943

As I've already said, OccultHawk is a suspect for practicing some occult ****, because every time he suggests an album, it gets elected immediately :/

We were supposed to be listening to this record last week, but nobody found a copy. I found one, but without the 4th track which is about 49 sec long. If you want it without it, I will share it with you. If it turns out that this week is not enough for getting to know the record and discussing it, we can always prolong it to the next week.

I'll take it as is.

I liked it, it was very interesting, a lot of little intricate details here, and there. I was a bit annoyed at the blurred together sort of improvy feel of the first few songs. I can definitely see where this is the beginnings of early 20th century avant-classical, however with only piano, there was a little to be desired.

As the recordings went on, they tightened up a bit, but still didn't lose their dissonant edge. I was a little annoyed at the repeat songs, but that always happens with these historical recordings. Obviously, the target audience is collecters, but it's annoying to hear one song 8 times in a row. Regardless, there's a strong ambient feel to these.

Obviously, they're very loose, improvised, and emotionally wide. I wouldn't say Ives is the most technically skilled piano player I've ever heard, but he isn't bad. Plus, realizing that he's beginning to pioneer a playing style which would greatly influence the majority of my catalogue, it was nice to hear it at it's roots.

However, at the very core, it didn't floor me. It didn't compel me enough emotionally to rate it 'excellent' like some composers/pianists have. Still, I have to say I enjoyed it, and respect it very deeply from a historical perspective. That's why I voted 'very good'.

Could you do me one Danks?

I'm just scratching the surface of Classical/Avant music. Ive's Symphony no. 3 is one of the few works I've heard so far and I'm loving it.

I don't know. Maybe they need more time for Charles Ives. I certainly do. I suggested the possibility of prolong it to the next week. Thoughts?

There's no time limit on any of these threads. Bump at will.
