J. G. Thirlwell / Foetus (lyrics, electronic, punk, albums, fan)

I just realized we don't have a thread for this guy.

He's an Australian musician, combined elements of industrial, post-punk and neo-classical into a behemoth of a songwriting style. Dark brooding vocals and some rather strange lyrical themes are present throughout his work. He emerged through the 'no-wave' era but his music really doesn't belong to it, there's a vast electronic influence to it. He's done quite a few collaborations over the years (including ones with Lydia Lunch and Nick Cave!) but these works really stick out as something special to me:

1985 - Nail (Scraping Foetus off the Wheel)
1988 - Thaw (Foetus Interruptus)
1995 - Gash (Foetus)
2001 - Flow (Foetus)

I know there's other fans here. Let me know if anyone needs an up, I've got most (?) of his work.

Janszoon and myself are fans. Janszoon loves them I think. The only one I don't have is Thaw. Excellent stuff.

Aw yeah! Huge fan here. J. G. Thirlwell is one of my favorite musicians. Have you ever seen him live? He fucking kicks ass!

I totally agree with the four albums you picked as being among his best though I like Hole a little better than Thaw and Love about as much as Flow. Do you get into any of his other projects, LS? Steroid Maximus and Wiseblood are especially good. If you don't have them I'd be happy to hook you up.

Do you have Deaf by chance? That's the only regular Foetus album that I don't have.

I can fix that if you want, homes. It's a really good album. Not good for mixed company though since it has some of the offensive lyrics the man ever recorded but they work well with the mood of the music.

I first got into Foetus via Hole, and the 12" singles of Calamity Crush, Wash/Slog and Finely Honed Machine in the 80's. I have been an avid fan/collector ever since. Buying his records got me into other groups like Nurse With Wound/Coil/Swans/Test Dept/Psychic TV etc somewhat at that time.

Need to get some more of his stuff . Recommendations anyone? And is he still active? I know he toured waaay back with some Swans members as his band and the reviews of the shows sounded like they were pretty intense affairs. No surprise.

Yah - JG is still doing a *lot* of stuff...soundtrack for 'Venture Bros." Just released his long-awaited soundtrack for the film adaptation of JG Ballard's "Atrocity Exhibition" and the 'DAMP' CD/DVD... check out foetus.org for more info.

I love a lot of what I heard of his work. Bought most of what I heard back in the Late 80's - Dating back to when I first spotted Hole in a bargain bin (true story), and hearing it for the first time and getting that "I need to hear more" feeling. In my opinion, he still remains one of the most talented and innovative artists around.
