Greatpiece for sure, i prefer Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, always been my favourite. ;)

It is beautiful, and I'm grateful for this thread. Obviously I've heard it a million times, but could never put a name to it until I gave it a Google just now. One of my favourite Classical pieces.

:bowdown::bowdown: PACHELBEL "Canon in D major"
|
If it's not the most beautiful, it is definitely one of the most popular.
|
I definitely love Canon, one of the best one hit wonders in history. Chopin has some really beautiful pieces though. Don't forget Debussy's Claire de Lune or Mozart's Fantasy in D minor. Those could definitely compete with Canon.
|
i think its overplayed
but it is very beautiful as long as its played right |
I have really grown to hate Canon in D. It's the most overplayed piece ever. It's an elementary recital piece that is designed for children, and follows a very simple chord progression. Yes, some simple and minimalist music can be awesome, but I put Canon in D and the same category of lullabies and children's music. The chord progression has been used in a million pop songs too.

I think its a beautiful piece but I've heard it so many times now that I just can't stand listening to it anymore.. |
Played this in Orchestra, and I agree that it's way too overplayed, but it is quite a beautiful song...not the most beautiful, but it gets the job done.
|
It's my favourite classical piece. That and Morning Mood. I creates very beautiful images in my head :o:
|
Yeah, so this thread is a year old.... I'll put in my 2 cents anyways. I like Pachelbel's Canon in D, but Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is just as beautiful. Take a listen, but the video it accompanies is hard to watch.

So, I prefer Pachelbel's Canon in D. I like the longer theme and its overlapping repetition (the canon structure), which satisfy me intellectually more than the Barber piece. More important, though, to me is the feeling of the song. Pachelbel's Canon feels exquisite to me. The structure seems invisible and effortless beneath the piece's feeling of supreme joy touched with sadness. Pachelbel's Canon in D epitomizes uplifting music, while Barber's adagio emphasizes tragedy: quite opposite pieces in this regard, really. Like others in the thread said, Canon in D is played very frequently...yet I understand why. It is a beautiful and extremely well-crafted, succinct piece. I even played it on my violin as part of a quartet at my own wedding, which was fun not only because I always liked playing Pachelbel's Cannon, but also because I liked breaking the rule about "not seeing the bride" before the ceremony. :) Now we can have a "sound-off" and you can listen to this version of Pachelbel's Canon in D to compare with Barber's Adagio for Strings. Can I lure you back to the Pachelbel fold? |

i like it... its really pretty.

I actually often prefer the warmer, lower sound of the viola to the thinner, higher sound of the violin. Pachelbel's Canon is a great one to play if you are the violinists, though. I must confess I don't usually get "viola" envy, because they often don't get the most exciting parts. Quote:

I'm sure it's been said on this thread before, but the piece is everywhere in pop music. It's such a nice progression though so I don't mind.
|
Very overrated piece. :)

I must have missed that post! Wow. Canon in D was composed by neither Beethoven nor Mozart!
|
Yeah, it was composed by Tchaikovsky, guys. Let's all learn to do our research.
(do YOU get the joke?) |
har har har.
|
Have any of you herd of the cannon rock version on youtube
i mean that tune was like wayyyy... to much, but it sounded good though on electric gitar. |
I really like the piece. However, it's over used all the time for weddings and such which kind of takes away from its awesomness for me.

i'm not really certain about American humor anyway - I'm more a dry wit/sarcasm kinda person |
I added this to my favorites, years ago and used to listen to it every morning before classes.
