I think it's been said in this thread before - while it's possible to learn on your own, having a teacher is a much more efficient way to proficiency on your chosen instrument.

@chopinisawesome - I'd suggest that being able to listen to and react to your fellow band mates (classical or otherwise) is a valuable skill.
