There were many great performers. Vladimir Horowitz is known is one of the greatest pianists of all time. I also think Glenn Gould plays Bach better than anyone besides Bach himself. Sviatoslov Richter, Artur Rubinstein and Georges Cziffra are worth mentioning as well.

Aaron Copland is my favorite to listen to. Gustav Holst as well.

I hate to say it, but I don't think anything from 1900 onwards can compare to the likes of Pachebal's Cannon.

But my favourite is Valse Triste, by a small margin...

Oooh, I'm glad to see Bartok came up. He's definately a personal favourite. I say that from both a listener and musician's point of view. Bartok is a real pleasure and challenge to play, some of his violin pieces are truly inspiring.

I guess I'll regurgitate what others have said as well, Rachmaninoff is the one to beat in terms of talent. I could listen to him all day.

We're talking about Steve Reich before Igor Stravinsky?

Dvorak is a 20th century composer? Why, because he lived until 1904? I don't get it.

Good calls. Stravinsky doesn't get any love on this forum.

I also thoroughly endorse your mentioning of Ligeti. What a great composer. His requiem and Lontano are especially worth mentioning.

His symphonies and piano concertos are incredible, as is his soundtrack for Alexander Nevsky. Another good composer yet unmentioned is Britten - best known for his War Requiem, but his Spring Symphony and Piano Concerto are are also good. Sibelius I don't think has been mentioned either, he has a great Violin Concerto and Symphonies, as well as Finlandia and the Karelia Suite.
