Ligeti Appreciation Thread... For Dissonance Lovers
 

Ok so I was just introduced to this gentleman's music last night. His name is Gyorgy Sandor Ligeti. I see a few of you have listed him as one of your favorite modern composers. He's from Transylvania and also lived in Hungary and Austria. Apparently some of his music is featured in various Kubrick films which would explain part of why I like him so much. (Thank you Wikipedia). His tunes are super dissonant. Supposedly his best music is composed for piano. Here are two examples. I'm hooked... and as the title of this thread states, this is probably due to my addiction to (well thought out) dissonance. Please ignore the first few seconds of the second video and try to enjoy the piece despite the obvious psychological short-comings of the person playing it. Opinions?

I've seen someone perform some of music live, it looks terribly difficult. But I've never really been able to get into much atonal music, but I definetly appreciate anyone who can compose it this well

I love the use of his music in 2001: A Space Odyssey but I haven't really listened to it much out of that context. I definitely want to do that sometime though.

Probably my favourite composer at the moment. That second video is absolutely hilarious though. Whoever was doing the editing must of had great fun. The section at around 2:36 or so when the picture suddenly switches to grainy black and white for no discernable reason is particularly entertaining. Oh, and yes, dissonance is awesome.
