Rulers who also composed music
I just found myself wondering listening to a sonata by Frederick the Great, which rulers are there who also composed music? I know about these so far:
Moritz of Hessen-Kassel Frederick II of Prussia Henry VIII of England Thibaut de Champagne Rudolf of Fenis-Neuenburg Alfonso X of Castile Does anyone else know any others? |
Does Clinton count?

Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il apparently composed operas.
But...North Korea. |

Maharaja Jayacamaraja Wodeyar was a great composer .He was the 25th and the last Maharaja of the princely state of Mysore ,India (now Mysore is a place in Karnataka state of India) from 1940 to 1950 . He was a noted philosopher, musicologist, political thinker and philanthropist .He wrote around 94 kirthis in rare ragas and taalas (Carnatic music) . He composed all his compositions in Sanskrit language in the praise of deities .His very first composition was "Sri Mahaganapathim Bhajeham" in Atana raga. Many noted Indian musicians received patronage at his court.
Personally -I really love to listen to his kirthi "shrI jAlandharam AshrayAmyaham jalajAkSam " in raga Gambheera Naattai. |
Richard The Lionheart was King of England from 1189 to 1199, although he only spent about six months in the country he supposedly ruled; he was completely focused on Europe and the Crusades and just used England as a source of revenue. Despite that, his reputation has remained high for 900 years and if he's thought of at all in England today, it's probably still with pride.
This song is attributed to him - it's even on wiki, so it must be true! Quote:
