Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C Minor Op. 68 Gödöllő Symphony Orchestra conducted by Szabolcs Hermann This is the best sounding version of the symphony I could find on the web. Sure, Karajan, Bernstein, Ozawa and several other notable conductors leading fine orchestras are streaming on the Tube but none (that I've found) sound better than this. If I could get a remastered version of the Karajan/Berlin Harmoniker 60s version that would be incredible. But this one is pretty thrilling. |
This is one of C.P.E. Bach's "Berlin" concertos (written during his time at court under Frederick The Great in Berlin). The sound could be a bit brighter (recording issue) and though the movements, save the conclusion, do have odd, abrupt endings this (rare) live performance is a fine one.

This aria was the first shuffle song of the day. From Felix Mendelssohn’s Paulus:
Seid uns gnädig, hohe Götter! (Have mercy on us, high Gods!) |
Just finished listening to a livestream of a performance of Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 by students and faculty of The Juilliard School. Also known as Death and the Maiden, it's a piece by Franz Schubert that has been called "one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire". It was composed in 1824, after the composer suffered a serious illness and realized that he was dying. It obviously has somber passages but a curious upbeat/furious conclusion.

Recently I downloaded a bunch of Charles Gounod who I just discovered recently.
I really like his vocals-only mass. Can't even find a version of it on Youtube. |
Absolutely monstrous piano playing, made even better by the fact that the thumbnail pic of the great pianist looks like one of the henchmen from the Joker episode of The Avengers (the 1960s British show, not to be confused with the superhero bs).

Francis Poulenc - Concerto for Organ
This was performed at the BBC Proms. I hadn't heard of him before so I decided to check out a bit more of his work and have enjoyed what I've listened to so far! |
