J.S. Bach: Concerto For 2 Violins, Strings, And Continuo In D Minor, BWV 1043
Gidon Kremer
Academy of St. Martin in the Fields

This piece is played often but Kremer, somehow playing both violin parts, really brings it to life (especially with the brilliant opening and final movements).

Kremer is brilliant. My personal favorite recording will always be his great teacher David Oistrakh with his son Igor on DG. Many would say that esp in comparison with more recent versions, Kremer's for example, it's too "inauthentic", as in not informed in the slightest by considerations of historical accuracy as raised by performance on period instruments, too lush, too "Romantic" etc etc. I'm sure that's all not without merit but I also don't care esp when it's Oistrakh with his warm, gorgeous tone. What they do with the slow movement is incredible (though all three movements are 10/10).

Yes, the period instrument/historical accuracy arguments are really pointless. All that matters is how we (the living) interpret it for our time. Actually, all that really maters is your enjoyment. I'll have to get a copy of the Oistrakh DG recording. Thanks.

Geminiani Concerti Grossi Opus 7 Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (1983, ASV)

Disc 6 of the big 50 disc box set from the 60th Anniversary of The Academy. Got it on shuffle. Prefer the concerti jumble. Not sure if each of the individual concertos are profoundly different, in any case.

This particular disc set always brings to mind Dave Hurwitz story about how he fooled the Geminiani snobs in his old record shop with Telemann or someone and how they left with smug approval of a completely different composer. Classic review.

Lachrimæ Caravaggio (Music inspired by Caravaggio) (2007, Alia Vox)

Beautiful playing of modern and Renaissance compositions - most with echoes of Marin Marais. The accompanying YT video is a glorious live version of the album. Set aside 90 minutes of down time for this treat.

One of the things that I find so wonderful about George Crumb is that you can
put his entire recorded output on shuffle and it sounds like one very long piece.
