People often think that musical innovation is connected to altered states. However the thing that Terry Riley is really known for is not his connection to the counterculture. His minimalist ideas and rhythmic structures in music. Many composers have thought outside the box in their ways with or, without using substances and it is the music of these composers that people still enjoy today. The music of Terry Riley is an example of this and it continues to inspire people who listen to music.
