Socialists verging on communist and it shows in his lyrics (well written by the way).
He's done some interesting material, but after prolonged listening his voice begins to grate.

My favorite song is A New England. He's a good songwriter and the Woody Guthrie stuff he did with Wilco is pretty cool.

He's an old school bard. Very enjoyable. Anyone heard his improv stuff? He released them in a set of cd's titled Bootlegs, or something of the sort. Pretty raw.
And I wasn't of fan of his collab.'s with Wilco; they're just two seperate awesomes of their own right. Didn't seem to mesh well.

I think he writes good lyrics. Maybe not especially great but I like them nonetheless.

Hmm, not much interest in Billy Bragg on this forum? Anyways, I was just recently introduced to him through his Mermaid Avenue collaboration with Wilco and I really liked his contributions to that album. Is the rest of his discography similar and what would be a good stepping stone?

By the way, anyone who hasn't checked out Mermaid Avenue and is really into the whole alt-country thing should check out these fantastic workings of Guthrie-penned songs, from both sides.
