I'll check out Atones, thanks for the pro-tip. Probably not living on campus. I'll be like 26 years old by then, probably feel out of place around a bunch of rebellious, horny, young...

I'm bored, so here's my updated list...

Gram Parsons
Possibly my favourite country singer-songwriter ever, he's been involved with some of the best albums of all time and been partly responsible for the directions that outlaw/alternate country took.

Emmylou Harris
My favourite 'country lady' who boasts a great voice and a good know-how of how to write effective, stylistically varied country rock tunes. Wrecking Ball is a top album too.

Gene Clark
One of the main songwriters behind the classic Byrds lineup. He has this interesting, Dylanesque (very lyric-centric and folky) slant on the country style he opts for. White Light's a classic album as well.

Guy Clark
More traditional than what I usually listen to, but that approach lets the lyrics grab your attention more which, given his knack for such things, is a great thing. His grainy kinda voice gives them that much more edge as well.

Townes Van Zandt
From what I've heard of him, his style is very similar to early Cohen and John Wesley Harding-era Dylan with more of a country vibe about it. Sounds a lot like most of the modern alternate country I've heard, which is quite something seeing as his debut came out in '69.

Guybrush 09-03-2009 07:22 AM

Thinking classic country artists (and not people like Mark Knopfler), my list looks like :

Jerry Reed
Earl Scruggs
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson

aaand ..

Hank Williams Sr.

I think that's the way it goes, at least at the moment.

I absolutely love Emmylou Harris! I don't take to a female country voice too often, but I make an exception for her. There is this song by Emmylou that I am HOOKED on right now. If you haven't heard it, put this on your list. Its off of the album "Honeysuckle Rose" (an album I've been meaning to review for sometime) and its called "So You Think You're A Cowboy".

Some stellar choices there Tore. I'm impressed.

julesg 09-04-2009 09:03 AM

1. The Be Good Tanyas (adorable Canadian folk/country group)
2. Johnny Cash (obviously)
3. Davy Knowles (though I guess he's more blues)
4. Jessica Simpson (...just kidding)
5. Hootie and the Blowfish (love this band!)

Haven't come across Honeysuckle Rose before, but I could swear I've heard of it somewhere or other - is it one of her later ones? I've got a lot of her 70s work, Wrecking Ball from the 90s and her last one, All I Intended To Be myself. Top lass - Elite Hotel and Pieces Of Sky are up there with the best of them.

Actually, Honeysuckle Rose is a Willie Nelson album/soundtrack off of his movie Honeysuckle Rose. I should have clarified that :) But she makes a guest appearance in it a few times one of them being that "So You Think You'e a Cowboy" song. Emmylou Harris's voice + Willie Nelson's guitar = bliss.

TyrantSong 09-15-2009 12:01 PM

1. Dwight Yoakam, seemlessly traditional while merging in that true Honky Tonk feel. "Blame the Vain" is one of my favorite albums of all time.
2. Merle Haggard, because no list is complete without one of the most unique "twangs" out there.
3. Kris Kristofferson, well, he writes most of his songs, and they're undeniably powerfull.
4. Reba, Probably the only female country singer that I like, and I like her enough to have her in my top five.
5. Garth Brooks, sure, he's a pretty ****ty singer, but damn if he's not the best showman country music has seen in years.

I don't put Cash on it, because, well, he's my favorite artist of all time, and everyone has already cited why I also like him. I just skipped him and did my 2 through 6. :D

tomlac 09-16-2009 07:40 PM

what, no one thinks much of Emmy Lou Harris, John Prine, Steve Earle. Definitely agree with Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt. Garth Brooks, give me a break, he does country?

Good list, Jay Munly is quite possibly one of the best Country artists to come about in the last ten years. I recently got The Builders and the Butchers first album and was fairly impressed by it, however I have yet to get their follow up. 16 Horsepower are also one of the best country acts to come out in the last 20 years and really helped kick off the Gothic Country genre (which I'm particularly fond of).
