Default Trying to identify a song

Hi all. The song I'm trying to identify was from the late 60's, early 70's, maybe early 80's, as I heard it in the 80's. I don't know the artist or remember any of the lyrics. I know it was a male singer.

A man is driving along a road at night and sees a young girl walking along the side of the road. He decides to stop and drive her home. When he gets to her house he knocks on the door and a woman answers. He explains about picking up the girl, turns to the car and she's gone. The woman says this happens on the same night every year - the girl was walking home but was hit and killed by a car, so her spirit still tries to make the same journey.

It's been annoying me on and off for years that I can't find it! I've tried many albums, playlists, etc, but just haven't come across it since.
