I wasn't aware of Townes Van Zandt until I was introduced to his music by some co-workers. "Our Mother the Mountain" was the first song I heard, and it stuck. "Tecumseh Valley", "St. John the Gambler" and "For the Sake of the Song" are also some of my favorites from this guy. He was an amazing lyricist. Its a shame that he basically drank himself to death in the hills outside Austin. But with music like his, its almost what you come to expect.

Reviving this...
Anyone a fan? This guy has been blowing my mind recently. Beautiful songs, beautiful lyrics. The Late Great Townes Van Zandt and High, Low And In Between are the two records I've heard so far. Totally enthralled by them, and checking out Our Mother the Mountain next. |

One of my favorite songwriters of all time. Townes just had a way with words unlike anyone else. He may have died fairly young; But his career had an impact on my listening. Townes' music is music that I can sit down, turn on a song, and before I know it listening to a large portion of his discography without even realizing it. Just amazing lyrics, and music. Much of it is dark, but that's the best kind of music.

An amazing writer who just seemed to continually sabotage any chances he ever had at a breakthrough. Not that he needed any breakthrough. Those who know him love him.
