^I fixed it
I personally like Lajko Felix very much. He's a Hungarian violinist, born in Serbia, so naturally there's a fusion of influences. It's some kind of an improvised ethno-jazz. Very good. Here's some taste of it: Lajkó Félix - A Király My favorite with Hungarian singer Magdolna Rúzsa - Még azt mondják (folk song) Lajko Felix and Boban Markovic Orkestar - Felix Kolo I only have two Felix's albums: Egyetemi Szinpad 1994-95 and Koncert '98, but now that I'm reminded of his great talent I gotta get me some more. |
I reminded myself in these past few weeks of this magnificent Macedonian band Anastasia, which I haven't listened to for a very long time, so I thought of this thread. For anyone interested in Balkan sounds, I recommend them wholeheartedly, especially their soundtrack album Before the Rain (1994) for the film with the same name. This Macedonian film by Milčo Mančevski is well known, internationally, I think, as it was nominated for an Oscar in 1995.
Anyway, Anastasia's music is heavily influenced by traditional Balkan (Macedonian in this case) folk, certain unique sounds that are usually described as Byzantine music (whatever that means nowadays) and Orthodox chants. All this is delivered through a modern dark wave and ethereal feel, similar to Dead Can Dance. I think this kind of fusion is the best for emphasizing those distinct Balkan sounds. |
Well according to my point of view, I think that Balkan folk music's isn't very sexy, Balkan music is a type of music distinct from others in Europe. But it brought a thigh-slapping, caterwauling Brisbane audience to its feet last night as world music kings Paprika, Balkanicus ripped their way through a spirited anthology of tunes, I think that progressive Balkan folk has seen rise in many western countries, particularly the United States.

I threw this song randomly into a mix cd I did at work and everyone was like WTF for a while but most of them love it now and so they should. Catchy as an STD in a rain sodden alley at 3am.

islandian band Storsveit Nix Noltes, sort of balkan music mixed with psychedelic rock.
|
And what you think about Balkan Beat Box? Does it still suit to the music of the region (worth to notice that band itself is from Israel)?
