Found this guy awhile ago, but didn't give him a proper listen til last night, man this guy is a seriously good song writer.

Great thread! I'm a big fan of The Handsome Family, Elliott Brood, Woven Hand, William Elliott Whitmore, and of course Sixteen Horsepower. I'm not terribly well-versed in the genre, obviously, but I'm really curious about O'Death and Jim White.

I disagree, the fact that you know Elliott BROOD and The Handsome Family shows that you pay particular attention to it. 16 Horsepower are considered the fathers of this genre because they were playing it back in '96 but I'm not sure if they coined the genre name or not. Regardless I am pleased to see you showing an interest in it, I was about ready to give up on this thread and focus exclusively on my blogs, however I may rethink that for the time being.

I've only heard the album "Head Home". My sister turned me on to them. I think the atmosphere they project is awesome.

When I first listened to it, it reminded me of if Dexie's Midnight Runners were kidnapped by a secret government agency, thrown into a remote outpost dungeon, made to live in their own excrement, fed nothing but a sporadic diet of raw meat and severe beatings.... for 15 years.

And then dropped off in downtown Nashville.

Just sent you "Broken Hymns, Limbs, and Skin" because it's far superior to "Head Home".

8 days and no updates, I've really let this thread slip.

Anyhow I FINALLY got around to buying this god damn album and I gotta say it's well worth the $9 I spent on it. Very similar to Those Poor Bastards but less harsh on the vocals. Sons of Perdition are a really good slow darrrrk country band.

I find this type of music very creative and interesting. I will say I'm not a huge fan of it, but its good that these artists are trying something so new and different with these old country beats.

To a guy like me who has grown up on the East Coast in places where there are still physical scars from the Civil War on the landscape, this kind of music is some of the spookiest stuff I've ever heard. It really strikes something in my basic self.

I'm really looking forward to hearing some more O'Death. Sorry, I won't download anything on somebody else's computer. And I don't have my own. So Head Home is still the only one I've heard so far. I just really dig how they still have that spooky edge, but have songs that remind me of getting ****faced and rowdy on moonshine in the North Carolina mountains.

I can respect your decision for being cautious around downloading, many times I have gotten bugs and other crap on my computer, however that was always through downloading programs or using p2p servers. Everything I give out is stuff that I myself have uploaded and can assure you is harmless. However as I stated earlier, I can respect your decision.

As far as being on the East coast where you can actually see some of the settings and inspiration for some of these artists, I cannot contain my envy. I've never been out East (at least in North America) and it is somewhere I very much would like to go to. Not only for the historical places (although that is a huge part of my desire) but from what I have heard the lifestyle is very different. I have always lived on the West Coast and really have only been subjected to their lifestyle, and while I think it's a nice place to be, I would love a change of scenery for awhile.
