THE Willie Nelson Thread

Everybody knows Willie Nelson, sure. But this man has been only recognized mainly for some of his songs like "On The Road Again" and "Whiskey River" when he has really done some deep poetic songs that have gone unnoticed by the mainstream population. That is why I want to start this thread to give some love to Willie that he very much deserves and to suggest a few songs to fellow Willie fans.

I have seen him in concert twice and he was amazing both times. He put his whole heart into both concerts which you don't see a lot in older artists. His guitar playing sounded as good as it did way back in the day. He had the whole crew of band members with him which was really great. Bobby Nelson was there playing piano with her trademark hat on, Mickey was still on harmonica, Paul English was on drums, and the other members Bee Spears, Billy English, and Jody Payne.

I'll start off a good little list of some songs that everyone needs to check out before you can diss Willie Nelson in any way.

"If You Could Touch Her At All" - Willie and Family Live
"Red Headed Stranger" - Willie and Family Live
"Me and Paul" - Wanted! The Outlaws
"Till I gain Control Again" - Willie and Family Live
"Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground" - Willie Nelson Live 1998
"A Song For You" - Willie and Family Live

So tell me about your favorite Willie songs and concerts and what you think of this dude.

To be honest I can't say I'm a big Willie Nelson fan, I love the fact he still uses that worn out nylon guitar. I don't collect his stuff but I do have the DVD of Willie Nelson & Friends Outlaws & Angels. I got because of his friends, he plays with the like of Joe Walsh, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, the killer: Jerry Lee Lewis, and a bunch of other people.

hopefully this isn't off topic, but Wille makes an excellent cowboy :) Honeysuckle Rose (1980), A Pair of Aces, and Stagecoach.

Yeah that old guitar is pretty awesome, I think that big hole its got gives it that certain trademark Willie sound. I think he named it Trigger haha. Yeah Willie has done so many duets and stuff with people its unbelievable.

Yeah I have Honeysuckle Rose. I love that movie but I have to admit that Willie is a better singer than an actor by far. haha

I agree wholeheartedly, his acting skills could use improvement, but he sure looks the part :D

I... I know this may be very difficult to believe. But, I like Willie Nelson.

His somewhat poppy rendition of country has a level of musical subtlety you don't usually find in country. Most country when you listen to it, it's impossible to find anything beneath the surface, but Willie tends to have this ability to apply some subtle transformations that give his songs a sense of motion that 99.9999% of country is oblivious to.

Listen closely, and you'll notice that he's actually going through quite a few phases:

Also, notice how small elements like the harmonica, guitar, etc. Enter just as they need to, when they need to. Really, for this style of music, the composition is superb. Suppose as superb as the lyrics are inane.

The two musicians, who have previously collaborated on a song called “My Medicine,” also once got high together and ended up on a spontaneous trip to KFC.
