Thumbs down Yanka Dyagileva / Янка Дягилева

Yanka Dyagileva was a Russian poet and singer-songwriter. She was one of the brightest figures in Russia's underground punk scene. She both played solo and performed with others, including Egor Letov and Velikie Oktyabri (the Great Octobers), a rock band. Dyagileva was greatly influenced by Alexander Bashlachev, who was her friend, and Letov, her lover and mentor. Her songs were a mixture of desperate, punk-style nihilism and folk-like lamentations.

On May 9, 1991, she disappeared from her countryside home, where she lived with her family. On May 17, her body was found dead in the Inya River. It is thought she probably committed suicide after a long bout with depression, although no formal finding of suicide was made.
It was only after her death that her records became known to the general public in Russia.

All her self-recorded tapes are free to download, mostly from confusing Russian sites. This is her final release, 1991's 'Styd i Sram (Shame and Reproach)'. It's probably my favourite and is only 7 tracks long. Wikipedia fails to mention her lifelong battle with alcoholism, and it's also important to remember the social context - being an artist not endorsed by the Soviet regime could get your locked up or much worse. Something Kurt Cobain certainly didn't have to worry about

Maybe this isn't for everyone (we'll leave that to the U2s and Lady gagas of the world) but there are some beautiful songs on here and it is her most far-out album musically, the traditional protest folk succumbing to total despair and some ineptly-played letric geetar, i love her
