It's funny, I just posted a video with that type of singing in the Huun Huur Tu thread! :laughing: I actually happened upon that type of singing after hearing this (around 3:00), which I know you heard since you PMed me about the album it came from... which I ended up being misled about. :( I'll never trust YouTube again. Anywho, I'm looking for African choir music along the lines of The Kenyan Boys Choir and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Any help would be appreciated!

Picked this up at the famous Down Home Records in El Cerrito Ca. Robert Crumb told me about this place in response to a fan letter and it is indeed a Country/Folk/World lover's wet dream.

I must say, in my short time on Music Banter, I find the folks in the country/folk/world thread to be the most personable and musically open....Good on ya.

I am in great need of some Recommendations.

Hey everyone.

This is my first thread, though I wasn't sure where to ask this as there aren't a Fusion forum and it isn't exactly jazz, I guess World comes closest. Anyways, here goes.

The last couple of months I have taken a liking to Al di Meola, mostly his earlier stuff as I don't quite love the way he went after approximately Electric Rendezvous. Now, when I say "taken a liking", I mean I love it so much I listen to him daily ;P
What bothers me is that he seems to be the only one as far as I can tell who knows how to incorporate Fusion and Mediterranean/Phrygian instrumental music. Though I have found a band called Dinner Music for the Gods
( You can find them on Soundcloud / dinnermusicforthegods ) who have taken his style to a little more heavy place (See, Splendido Hotel - Dinner Music OF the Gods for where they got the name ;D ) and I have fallen for that band too. All their tunes are super kickass.

But too the point...
I was thinking that I could Throw up some songs that represent the style I am looking for, hope that anyone reads this thread and cross my fingers that someone knows something like it. Maybe someone who haven't heard this before will like it too which would be just as good to know ! :D
But I will start this list off with the undisputed most badass phrygian track ever and write some side notes to the tracks along the way:

although it has it's cheesy moments, like the intro and the harpsichord part towards the end , I think this one is BAD-ASS (especially 2:05) and don't get me started on the first guitar solo ;P

I love how much this one changes all the time while it stays on the same "topic" so to speak. (For most badass part, check 3:06)

I think that will be enough for now :P every music recommendation engine I have tried to type Aldi in to just gives me Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin and Return to Forever. I'm not the biggest fan of John although if you know some of his stuff thats not just shredding on shredding, I'm open :)

Again, I really hope someone knows some artists in this style, because there is not enough of this kind of music. It is simply just so badass :D

Michael Doucet Dit Beausoleil - I think this was Michael Doucet's first album with Beausoleil and may be his first album altogether. Just a bit rawer and bluesier than later records and all the better for it. I guess some folks would consider Doucet's brand of Cajun a bit homogenized compared to some of the earthier backwoods stuff, but I have always found the musicianship on the early Beausoleil and Savoy-Doucet records to be impeccable and very soulful.

I bet I'd find many new folk bands to like if I wasn't such a lazy bastard and would skim through this thread more closely (perhaps some day I will), but if someone could recommend some folk/folk rock bands or artists for someone like me - a relatively new folk lover. Something easy, something that won't scare me away. I prefer male vocalists with deep voice, though I'd be interested to get to know some female vocalists too, since so far I mostly listen to male vocalists (how many times can I use the word "vocalists" before I get repetitive?) Some YouTube links to songs you guys prefer would be appreciated. Thank you in advance :)
