Two lovely old songs about lovers parted by rivers.
Kate Rusby - Annan Waters / Bring me a Boat |
This should maybe go in the blues section? I dunno. Who cares. It's a fantastic live rendition of a great song. This was her TV debut too.
KT Tunstall - Black Horse and a Cherry Tree (Jools Holland) |
Genius.
Gillian Welch - I Dream A Highway |
Been revisiting Gillian Welch albums tonight. This one's a beauty.
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator) |
One of my favourite songs of all time.
Kate Rusby - The Wild Goose |
I've been on a Hank Thompson binge for a couple of weeks. There's a simultaneously charming and unsettling irony to a lot of his alcohol-era albums. The lyrics are consistently soul crushing but his delivery is usually beaming and energetic, it's like he's beaming ear to ear with tears streaming down his face.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Your Long Journey
|
Neko Case turned me onto country - 'Hold On' is one of my favourite songs.
Dolly Parton 's Jolene unexpectedly grabbed me. I put her here, despite her fame and familiarity, because I would never have believed I would listen to her. So she might be something 'new' to some people. Your beauty is beyond compare With flaming locks of auburn hair And ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring Your voice gentle like a summer rain If I'm not mistaken that's poetry. Lastly I must recommend Googoosh an Azeri/Persian singer. Persian music s a fascinating blend of Western and South Asian music - astonishingly passionate. The arrangements are also very good. |
