Laura Marling

Did a search and no thread for her came up. Very talented young woman, one of my picks for the Mercury this year, but alas. I Speak Because I Can is one of my favourite albums of 2010 so far. Any other fans?

I checked her out just to see whats up with it

and her voice I REALLY love. honestly I'm gonna be checkin this girl out tomorrow, lyrics are great, and even though the guitar is good its not outstanding

totally faved on youtube so I will make sure to listen to more cause "New Romantic" is damn good.

if you would throw out some good songs for me that would be great cause I'm curious

(also as a side note shes extremely cute too)

Hmm... She does have a very nice voice, but the moment I saw her I had a feeling she was going to be like all the other sad, beautiful female songwriters out there. For your comparison:

And kind of stretching with this one, but I think it works:

I used to love the first two artists. Listened to Washington for a long, long time, and the same goes for Spektor. But Washington came after Spektor, and one day while I was listening to it it occurred to me I'd heard this sort of thing before. And more than once. But if you can get past that, it's all lovely music and Laura Marling sounds like an excellent addition to its category.

Devil's Spoke, Rambling Man, Hope in the Air, Darkness Descends. All good stuff.

Will check out the aforementioned songwriters in the future. Promises.

I agree with your description of these four singers: their music does sound similar. I listened to the start of three of Laura Marling's songs ("Ghosts," "New Romantic," and "Devil's Spoke") as well as those youtube videos you posted. Their music sounds very willowy and sweet.

I actually didn't care for Laura Marling's music much (based on the three songs I listened to). But I did like aspects of that Washington "Clementine" song you posted (such as the variation within the song with build-ups and releases)...and I like all of their voices. As a child I enjoyed the humorous song "Clementine," where the suitor watches Clementine die blowing bubbles in the mill pond because, alas, he is no swimmer. I assume Washington is singing about that Clementine? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzCSTMWix3g

I guess part of what I don't like in these Laura Marling and other songs is the subject matter: the tedious tearing apart and analyzing of relationships among people and the self-analysis. Maybe I do that enough myself that I don't want to listen to it! :p:

Well, I don't know. I'm glad you liked Clementine, but I'm not sure if there's much meaning to be had in the lyrics. There are undeniable similarities between the songs (I'm familiar with Oh My Darling Clementine, too), and perhaps Washington's words are supposed to refer to saving the life of Clementine, but I don't think there's really any point in the reference besides providing something to sing about.

To be honest, I don't really like these performers anymore, but I posted them because I thought someone else might if they'd come here for Marling. I'm with you, VEGANGELICA, I've got enough of the pseudo-drama one hears in their songs in my life--not very much at all, but enough--that I don't really want to hear music about it. (But there's nothing wrong with those who do!)

Oh yes, there's nothing wrong with people liking Laura Marling's music, since different music speaks to different people. But it is true that to me the songs seem to be myopic "pseudo-drama," like you wrote. Perhaps I'm missing some of their meaning?

I just listened to this song, Laura Marling's "She's Changed," and felt that, #1, the tedium of the details, which seem fairly meaningless to me, is just too much, and, #2, ARGHH! I don't care if she has changed or not!!!

Also, I just don't like the *sound* of this song. It seems so repetitive, like a broken record, going on and on and on, first at one speed, and then at another.

I may just be in a cynical mood, though, tonight.

Her Demos from a few years ago were great, not picked anything up of her lately. All I can remember are tracks called London Town & something along the lines of '...tap at my window'. Gonna have a search now, good when threads like this remind you of an artist!
