I suppose I'll nominate Exuma's debut album, which was released in 1970. Basically, it's an early freak folk album that incorporates a somewhat African-like vibe into its music. It's rare for me to find an album and enjoy it from start to finish, and I have to say that this is one of those rare albums.

The album was recently selected by http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...lbum-club.html - but of course anyone is very welcome to comment. :)
What do you think of it ?

Great album! Though the first track is by far the best so sometimes the rest of it feels like a bit of letdown in comparison.

I shouldn't have listened to it as early as I did, because I don't remember too much of it now. It was one of my first freak folk albums, and while I probably won't listen to it a lot, I admired its passion.

It's pretty good, but in my opinion there is much better freak folk out there from the same period. Fuchsia, Gandharva, Trees, Comus and Spirogyra back up my point.

Spirogyra and Comus... definitely. The rest... not so much (especially Fuchsia).

EDIT: Actually... Trees are pretty good. :)

I loved the sound of this album; the rough voice, the simple instrumentation, the off-beat lyrics all reminded me that very often in music, less is more. With zombies and the afterlife mentioned in almost every track, it plays like a concept album and although, as Janszoon says, the title track is probably the strongest, I found the others equally interesting. The real stand out for me is Seance in the sixth fret, with the only weak point being the last track, The Vision.

From the croak of the first frog - and how many albums can you say that about? - from the croak of the first frog, I was reminded of the classic Gris-Gris album, which is perhaps not surprising because Exuma turns out to be just one thousand miles by sea from Dr. John`s stamping ground. They were almost neighbours, dipping into the same slave-route voodoo sound.

If that`s true, Stu, why don`t you nominate something for our next poll ?
In the meantime, I`m voting excellent for this album and have already got myself the follow up album, Exuma II.

Fuchsia's my favourite out of the lot! One thing I will say about Exuma I is that it's a grower.

You won't be disappointed... I found it just as good (if not better) than his debut.

One of my favourites this is. So much more than just 'freak folk'. Shares the voodoo charm of Dr John and has traces of early Beefheart.

Cosmic.

Don't you mean Obeah charm? ;)
