Vote for a FAIR album before Jan 14

Every two weeks the Folk And International Roots Album Club will vote for an album that they will listen to and discuss in the coming weeks.
Anyone can vote in this poll, but if you vote, please follow through and be ready to discuss whichever album wins the poll.
These are the candidates to choose from :-

This one's new to me but sounds promising.

^ This album has appeared in every poll since August 14th and hasn`t attracted much attention recently, so I figure it`s time to put it on LAST CHANCE status. If it doesn`t win this week, it`ll be stood down, ok ?

Rather mellow album from a prolific musician.

Congotronics (2005) by Konono No.1

http://www.crammed.be/fileadmin/user...ver/craw27.jpg

Congotronics consists of African chants accompanied by traditional thumb pianos fed through some rudamentary electronics which have been cranked up to distortion levels. The result sounds like something which may be a one-artist genre; Industrial Afro-trance Folk. Most of us will never witness a local Kinshasa band playing together in a courtyard with some home-built amplifiers, but this album gives us an unadorned indication of what they sound like.

Dead Combo Vol.1 by Dead Combo (2005)

http://f0.bcbits.com/z/10/21/1021884149-1.jpg

Fado is a traditional Portuguese guitar style, but on this album Dead Combo have taken it apart and rebuilt it with the same kind of slow, intense, precision that Ry Cooder used on his Paris,Texas soundtrack. Just like RC, this duo -guitar and double bass- perform musical magic by going back to the simplest things but somehow charging them with a new beauty hard to describe.
(PS.This Dead Combo are from Lisbon and shouldn`t be confused with an Irish band who use exactly the same name.)

Live At Massey Hall, 1971 by Neil Young (2007)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NYzUtn3pVx...masseyhall.jpg

Something old, something relatively new from Canada`s greatest musical export. NY plays a solo acoustic set, between Harvest and Gold Rush chronologically, which makes it quite possibly his folkiest album ever.
Be they sacred or profane, sublime or ridiculous, here are another six albums to choose from.
Which will you go for ? Which will you love ?

This poll has been up for a week, but has now closed with only one vote. Sad to say, that vote came from myself, so I`m declaring this a void ballot.

To conform with the club the calendar, I`m going to leave one week to see if any new nominations come in, then I`ll open another poll on Jan 21st and see if that does any better. If it flatlines again, I guess I`ll declare the FAIR album club clinically dead. :(

Sorry Lisnaholic, I was offline away on holiday. Big Neil fan and I haven't heard Live at Massey Hall so I would have voted for that one. Must seem like a bit of a thankless task running these album clubs. Apologies for the flat-lining.

I was on vacation. It's a 40 °C summer here (like 100F).

I find the choices a bit dull (except by my own nomination :D ). But I'm not allowed to vote for it, so my choices are either Ali Farka Touré or Dead Combo.

EDIT: No I can't vote. Poll is closed.

Given that is the last chance for Ali Farka Touré, I give my vote to it.

Welcome back from your summer vacation, fazstp. Yes, it was pretty quiet here while you were away, so I`m glad to hear that you haven`t deserted us completely, and I hope you and Argento both enjoyed your hot Christmas.

^ Try to resist the urge to vote for your own nomination. As this poll didn`t collect any votes at all, I think we should give Ali Farka Touré another chance in the next poll, don`t you ?

Maybe we should wait for in case that more people is on Christmas vacations.

How long are vacations in the northern hemisphere? Do you get some weeks for winter?

I would like to giving Ali Farka Touré another chance, since is my pick, and was nominated by Fazstp, who is back.

And I want to know how other members think of those African singers, since I also nominated an African album, even when my nomination has no relation to Farka Touré.

Lisnaholic 01-21-2012 07:49 AM

The Christmas break isn`t that long in the Northern hemisphere.
I think across all those countries it`s safe to say that the school or college break is usually about two weeks, while shops and offices might get one week if they are lucky. So I`m assuming that most MB posters are back at their keyboards; MB only has a limited number of Southern Hemispherians.

If I follow the club calendar, and open a poll today, people will have until the end of January to vote, which seems like time enough to me.

About your nomination, I have a track by Bidinte on a different Putumayo compilation album. It`s a nice track, though what strikes me most is not so much Bidinte, but the exquiste voice of an anonymous female backing singer, who really makes the track ring.
Oh, just seen that my album, "An Afro-Portuguese Odyssey", has a track by Manecas Costa too - I`m going to give it another play right now !
