David Thomas Broughton
Recently downloaded his debut album, The Complete Guide to Insufficiency (2005), and I was completely memorized by it. His unique voice, his interesting use of live sampling, the subtle progression in his guitar work... everything. While the album is clearly an example of avant-folk, it's strangely accessible and gives off a very warm and ethereal feeling that can be a bit unsettling at times. (I would highly recommend it to fans of the genre and to those wanting to get into it).
The album itself was all done in one take with occasional improvising here and there. The background behind it has a rather charming simplicity to it as well: just a man and his guitar playing music in a church (you can even hear the church bells in the background). It has been said that the man enjoys a certain level of spontaneity in his own music, so this would make sense... Anyways... here are two songs by him... The first is a live recording and the other is from his debut. While the live recording is around fourteen minutes in length, it would be best to listen to it in its entirety to get a feel of what his music is about. Thoughts, opinions, etc? Anyone a fan of his music? |

Any opinions about The Complete Guide To Insufficiency from FAIR Album Club voters ?
Thanks to Jack Pat and These Guys, we can air our views here, so don`t be shy - even if DTB`s manager may be looking on ! EDIT: What I think of "Insufficiency": The title and cover of this album are both intriguing; we are led to expect something out of the ordinary, and DTB doesn`t disappoint. This is a really strange album, not in the wordy, whimsical way I imagined it would be, but because it is a combination of simple, but sometimes sinister elements. Execution and Ever Rotating Sky are good examples; we start off lulled by some gentle guitar strumming, but after a few off-beat lyrics we are lured into a long, hypnotic section with some strange accompaniment to keep us off balance. Is this music sophisticated or simple ? Is the song building up or fading out ? Everything seems to remain ambiguous in the magical, minimal world of David thomas Broughton. Where you find these guys, Jack ?! |

I'm not sure I totally connected with this album. I did enjoy the odd mix of acoustic and his kind of experimental approach to getting original sounds from his guitar. Didn't connect so much with his vocals though. I will give it a few more listens though because I imagine I may adjust to his sound.

^ Yeah, at first I didn`t like the sound of his voice either, but I tolerated it for the sake of the instrumental sections.
Have you listened to the OP clip ? I think the lyrics there are a bit stronger than on some of the album tracks. |
What? I love his voice (it's one of my favorite aspects of his music). It's so wooden and authentic... Not to mention unique...
What exactly do you dislike about it? |
