Brazilian music

Hey all, I recently hosted a couchsurfer from Brazil who copied his ENTIRE iPod on to my laptop. He basically said he'd given me everything classic and well-known, most seems like samba or bossanova (is that the same thing)? I actually like the way a lot of it sounds, and I kind of knew what to expect because I love Tribalistas, Zeca Baleiro, and Vanessa da Mata already.

HOWEVER, it's just too much. So that said, I may end up deleting a lot/most of it, for the sake of space and convenience on my library which is a mess now. But before I sort of flush what I don't already like and know, can anyone give me some suggestions? Whatever bands/groups you think I should check out I probably have-I mean literally it's like 64 GB of Brazilian music. So give me some names and I'll give them a listen before I trash them.

Thanks!

:yikes:

AH! By the way, this my 100th post! AWESOME

Keep anything with Joao Gilberto, and any covers of The Girl from Ipanema.

Oh, and Mutantes.

That is the extent of my knowledge of Brazilian music, but those are worth listening to for sure.

Jesus Cristo! My knowledge of Brazilian music is sadly limited and I have no recommendations but please send me some of the highlights please! :)

OMG I am having so much fun listening to all of this. I wish I could have invited everyone from MB to my apartment for the occasion. We could have sipped Turkish coffee and sat on the balcony and watched the ships go by the Bosphorous. Although it is really too cold for that. Ya'll free this summer?

This is a classic.

Would just like to update you guys with two of my favorite songs. I managed to get 75% of the way through, with your help, and most of it just sounds repetitive--I mean, there are only so many times that a Bossa Nova song can sound new, fresh, and different from the others.

That said, I'd encourage any curious parties to check out Roberta Sá and Vinícius de Moraes e Toquinho.

Mandingo by Roberta Sá...

No Colo da Serra by Vinícius de Moraes e Toquinho...probably my favorite song from my surfer's entire collection. Great track.

I don`t know much about Brazilian music either, Miss P, but you might like to look at these ideas before you erase the rest of your friend`s collection:-

(Yes, I agree, a little bossa nova is fine, but it`s a rather over-exploited genre.)

ooh - just remembered that this old cd has some good tracks on it, like this long, sustained instrumental :-

Other good tracks are by Alex Kidd, the Boyz From Brazil, Russ Gabriel, the Deal and Isolee ... so you could watch out for their names too.

Thanks for the link -- I had no idea there was already a thread! Mods can combine the two if they see fit!

:) Thanks, Lisna!
