Default Gagaku (and Shō!)

Crazy ass 7th century Japanese court music.

Lots of awesomeness at play here. The Japanese aesthetic concept of "Ma" emphasizes space in composition. The instruments are pretty cool, too. This is the Japanese version of a harmonica (technically a mouth organ), called "shō," or as I like to say, "face castle"*:

Yyyyyeah boiiiii. Dem kordz.

The Japanese shō is related to the khaen from Laos, and the Chinese sheng.

What an incredible sound. I was fortunate enough to be at the Los Angeles premier of Unsuk Chin's sheng concerto, "Šu". I bought the ticket for Mahler, but the opener blew me away.

* Sarcasm.
