The Official Flamenco Thread
This is the official thread for flamenco of all forms: classic, jazz, nuevo, dance, anything you want.
Flamenco has been rocking my socks off lately for the past year or so with its vibrant passion and stellar guitars. I'll leave some of the classics open for other posts but here are a few of my favourites Spoiler for Lole y Manuel:
Spoiler for Vicente Amigo:
(this sneaky mf) Spoiler for Estrella Morente:
Spoiler for Pedro Soler and Gaspar Claus:
Also if someone could explain the difference between flamenco and flamenco nuevo, that'd be nice. |
We used to have a pretty knowledgeable fellow here who
knew all about the intricacies of flamenco. He's gone, I guess. My understanding is that traditional flamenco comes not only from Spain, but southern Spain and certain villages - it's very geocentric - whereas the new forms extract from all kinds of other areas and tries to incorporate those - sometimes successfully. |
That was Aloysius who was a great poster. He's probably the most well-informed posters I've seen on the board when it came to flamenco and music theory in general. He turned me onto the great Jose Manuel Leon.

Flamenco music has been a passion of mine for a long time, but I don't really know much about it other than the more popular acts, like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT9hvyDvKHA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oyhlad64-s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9efHwnFAkuA ...and then there's this little masterpiece I've touted around here for some time now. Not traditional flamenco, but a take on it combined with some pop influences. Considering the artist, it's not surprising the way it can be both. Stevens was heavily influenced by a Paco concert and decided to create something with a flamenco flavor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJUyv-WBYdM I've been recently digging Strunz and Farah too. Sexy music. |

Great performances! Paco De Lucia is a master,..and what a groove!! Gabriela and Rodrigo are great guitarists but they play really too fast to my ears

Does anyone know of any good male flamenco vocalists? The female vocalists and guitarists are ****ing undeniable, but I haven't found anything with standout male singers yet. There's Camarón, but if you're going to rec me something from him, I'd prefer something without those cheesy synth presets.

The Reyes family are all pretty good. Jose, the father, started Gypsy Kings.
