Bob Dylan

Oh, it’s probably that Freewheelin’ stereo first pressing then.
Somebody will offer you six figures for that.

It's a reel to reel from 64 which is why I'm having trouble getting it appraised.

rostasi 12-15-2018 08:33 AM

Yeah, that could be a problem, because you’re gonna have to get someone who’s so much of a fanatic for Dylan that it won’t matter if they can’t play the tape without a reel machine. Have you tried Dylan-only forums or Dylan collectors on reddit? Not necessarily to sell, but to have them point you in a direction?

Also, you may want to look here for a reference on price.

Unless there’s something extra special about the reel, I wouldn’t expect all that much. In other words, don’t expect a lot just because it’s on a reel. I’ve got a local friend who has a collectors fantasy about 8-Tracks and they sit in a room basically unsold.

I want to add that tape from ‘64 will practically be unplayable unless someone knows what procedure to go thru for it to be transferred (baking it, for instance), so, if you have some rare recording of some live thing he did back in ‘64, then you have to keep that in mind too.

I actually had a musician friend transfer it to CD. The tape is in good condition and the sound is good as well. Its 4.5 songs that are on the 50th Anniversary 9 LP collection that Sony released a few years ago.The only difference in the tapes is that Sony edited out the chatter and talking between songs.Mine remains un edited .This also pretty much cements my opinion that these were NOT recorded at 532 Beach Rd. my home at the time.I think they were recorded in Cambridge instead. My step father was Eric von Schmidt and my mother left me this tape when she died. I'm new to all this forum stuff but I've started it now. Where here would I access for a possible idea on price? Dylan forums....I have a lot of work to do!

Well, it's nice to "meet" someone related to Eric von Schmidt. You must be one of his two daughters? For what it's worth (coming from just me), your step-father had more talent in his guitar strumming pinkie finger than Dylan would ever hope to have in a lifetime of his constant ripoffs. I don't know how he was as a dad, but as a musician, songwriter and painter, your stepdad was heads above so many others who seemed to get more of the attention.

So, are you saying that in May of '64, he and Dylan didn't meet up in Sarasota to record - that it was elsewhere? If so, then that would probably throw a wrench into the info-collectors brains. No matter here tho.

Nice to hear from you. I'd be curious in what happens next. My only advice would be to not be in a hurry and do your research so that you don't feel at a loss as to what you may have given up in the future. Music industry types lurk...

thanks for being here.

No that's Kate and Meg. My mother Kay married him in late 64. Thanks a bunch for all your help and yes, taking my time is a must.

alientrouble 12-15-2018 12:04 PM

and BTW, thanks for the thoughts of Eric.
