In the 70s Iran wanted to blend western culture in with their own. The people wanted a more secular or heavily reformed take on Islam. Western tourists could drink and smoke hash and dance with Iranian women in discos. And a lot of Iranians still want a friendly relationship with the west and even America in particular. They’ve given us every culture signal that they want to be friends. Iran should be the core of a new relaxed Islam but America has made it next to impossible for them not to become radicalized. I’m not saying that there hasn’t always been dangerous powers in play in Iran but I am saying if we weren’t such dicks ourselves this whole thing could’ve gone in a different trajectory.

There’s still time. It’s doubtful but we could still bring an olive branch to Iran. If we do attack them and start a war it’s important that we have huge demonstrations so they know it’s not all of us
