That teacher probably knows more than the public will assume they do. I guarantee the “show your work” bull**** is unevenly applied to black kids who are able to reach the solution while skipping steps. It also reinforces the painfully white and ignorant hypothesis that there’s only one way to skin a cat - the right way which of course is the white way. Plus, the obsession with coming up with the exact number at the end of a math problem instead of demonstrating an ability to understand the process is from what I’ve seen an almost uniquely American way to teach mathematics. They don’t obsess over the final number in Korea or Japan the way American teachers do. And it’s not like American teachers don’t represent a classist white hegemony.
